What is a "MAF"?...Does it apply to the 993 Turbo?...If so, how do you clean or maintain the MAF?...I saw a post regarding this on the 996 Turbo board and was curious if it applys to the 993 Turbo....Thanx...SteveC
A MAF is a Mass Air Flow sensor (I believe that is the basis of the acronym). It is an interesting invention that started showing up in cars roughly 20 years ago.
As I recall (and I only know this because I was fascinated with its simplicity when I read about it many years ago) the MAF is essentially a coil that is heated to a specific temperature and resides in the midst of the intake airflow. As air flows into the engine, a computer monitors how much energy is required to keep the coil at a set temperature. By knowing that energy requirement, and knowing the ambient air temperature, the system can determine how much air is flowing in to the engine. It replaces moving flaps and other problematic older mechanical means of airflow measurement. Quite an amazingly simple solution to an important requirement.
I do not know for sure whether it is present in a 993 but I'd be pretty confident that it is. It is certainly present on the 997.
Hope that helps.

Addition:
Just wanted to add that because it is basically a coil laminated on to a piece of plastic run by a simple computer that is sensitive to any variants, it is a relatively delicate part. A MAF need to be handled carefully when being handled, removed, installed (i.e. don't touch it (the oil from your hands are not good for it), or removed. Further, it you suspect that there is a problem with it, you can clean it with MAF cleaner (at the auto parts store) or electronic circuit board cleaner (available at an electronics store) or best yet, buy a new one.
