Purchase ?'s
Purchase ?'s
I have been reading here for a while with an eye towards an eventual purchase of one of the last of the air cooled masterpieces :-)!
I am looking at a 97 C4 cabriolet... that has the following add ons:
-High performance clutch
- Porsche racing chip
- lowered suspension
If you would please comment on each of these "upgrades".. specifically what they accomplish, additional maint., etc. I am specifically concerned about the lowered suspension.
I have read the clutch generally goes every 40K. Any other issues I should look at specific to the C4?
The vehicle has close to 100K miles.

The description is a bit vague.
What clutch was put in it? High performance really mean nothing. They last a LOT longer then 40kmi, even on the C4. The preferred clutch is the Stock Carrera RS unit with flywheel.
Porsche never made any ECU chip for the 993, so you might want to ask who made the chip, & if they have a receipt. There are only a few brands out there for the 993. They help, but don't make huge power gains. There is no added maintaince with a chip, you just HAVE to put good gas in it all the time. Even stock you should be doing that.
Again, lowered suspension means almost noting. Are they just springs, Stock Euro parts, or upgraded with a coil over kit? Again, it can be a value added good thing, or letting you know you might have to replace the stock shocks soon. They look so much nicer lowered!! The popular upgrade is Euro Sport springs (M030) with Bilstein HD shocks.
My only advice, get it checked out at a good local Porsche independent shop. If it checks out, then get it.
