If you can't deal with it, then don't get a 993. I have 2 a 90kmi car & a 40kmi car. Both are in top shape & don't have any SAI or valve issues.

993 Bliss

I wanted a 993 since they arrived in 95. I began a serious search three years ago +/-. It was a casual search for the correct vehicle. I found my car early this year and it become mine on my Birthday in April.

After a bit of research I setteled on the 1995MY as the focus of my search. I am a bit of a tinkerer and was a fan of being able to simply chip the car with OBD I. Call me old school, but less is more sometimes.

I like the fact that I can have a simple chip remapped to accommodate and get the most out of any modification. Just me.

All of that said - enjoy the car you choose and get a leak down test. I signed up for a PPI, asked about the leak down test and, surprising to me, it was not an included item on this dealers Standard PPI. Just my experience.

My neighbor has a 996 and loves the car. Now that I have the 993 he is actually casually looking for an older car. I prefer the air cooled, old school 911's. If you lean this way get the correct car and enjoy. It has been pure bliss for me!

Wow...long search. If I compare my time to yours I am barely getting started.

Ok, I have to admit something...what does 1995MY mean? I have seen this more than once and never understood what the MY stands for. Sorry if stupid question. Does it stand for Manufactured Year? If so, wouldn't just saying a 95 or 96 mean that or is there a valid reason to include that acronym?

Thanks for the encouragement. I have broadened my search but still wouldn't mind a nice clean 95.

My

MY = Model Year

Yes, I looked long and hard. But did find the exact vehicle in showroom condition for a reasonable dollar. And my search was casual and intentionally picky and slow. Enjoy the journey, but be aware that the purchase is just the beginning. This has grown into a full blown obsession.

Thanks for the clarification. Is there a specific reason it is necessary to state 96MY over 96? Or just for clarification purposes. I always have a hard time with some of the acronyms that have popped up because of IM, texting, and forums.

My wife worries about my obsession in searching will turn into my obsession with the car once/if I find the right one.

Smile Correct

Your wife is correct! I've invested approximately 1/4 of the purchase price in upgrades to a perfect car. Complete carbon fiber kit, Rod Birch Audio - complete system, some here, some there. Oh well - not everyone's children need to go to college!

OK, I'll bite. As someone who is just starting to shop for a 993, what exactly does SAI stand for and what is the issue?

Note to admins: Had anyone considered a glossary sticky for this site?

Thnx.

SAI stands for Secondary Air Injection.

The 993 had small ports bored into the engine to help mitigate emissions during start-up. Over time, these small passages become clogged with carbon deposits. On OBD-II 993s (1996-1998), it will throw a check engine light when these passages become clogged, thus making the car fail smog in states where a CEL is an automatic smog check fail. The 1995 993 is prone to the same problem, but since it's OBD-I, it won't throw a check engine light because of it.

Clogged SAI ports have zero effect on the car or it's performance in any way. It's only a smog check issue.

The solution is to do a pain in the *** removal of these deposits, via either solvents, or on Rennlist I've read some who've used old bass guitar strings and lots of elbow grease to clear them. Either way, it's an issue only because for some it reeks of Big Brother because this SAI port getting clogged has no ill effect on the car, other than passing smog.

Hope this helps.

Thanks - that's exactly what I needed.
