Fuel Tank Capacity
Fuel Tank Capacity
I started a thread on this yesterday, but apparently it was lost along with all the other posts and threads.
The owner's manual for my car states it has a 16.6 gallon fuel tank. When I fill it up with gas, the needle goes all the way up past full. When it reaches about 1/8 of a tank, the low fuel light comes on. However, if I stop immediately and get gas when the low fuel light comes on, I can only put about 10.5 to 11 gallons of gas in the car.
Does everybody else's car behave this way? Do we really have 16.6 gallon tanks? I have driven the car to the point where the needle is almost on E and the fuel range says I have 30 or so miles left, and still could only get 12.5 gallons of gas in the car.
Has anyone here run out of gas before? Could you get 16.6 gallons in there afterwards?

If I new for sure I could drive the car all the way down to where the needle is sitting on E without worrying about running out of gas that would be fine. I drive the car everyday, and would prefer to only have to get gas every four days instead of every three if possible.
When I was able to get the 14.5-14.6 gallons in it was just below the E line (low like your thinking your going to run out low) - the numbers from your first post are consistent with what I have seen - I agree it's a PITA having to stop so frequently - mine is also my DD. Good Luck!! T2
Not sure about capacity, but I do know that the computer estimation of fuel left is a little optimistic.
Soon after purcashing the car, my wife and I went for an early(very for her) morning drive.Computer said 35 or so km left of fuel.We ran out of fuel within a few minutes...around 3 - 4 km later????
...wife wasn't very happy...other motorists seemd to take some pleasure from our misfortune...don't you hate that.
Never fully trusted the fuel computer after that.

OP: I can usually get no more than 10.5-11gal. I probably should get more in there, but this isn't uncommon. I haven't bothered trying either of the below because I'm just not worried about it enough.
You can recalibrate the fuel gauge by disconnecting the battery for several minutes. There's also a recall on a valve somewhere in the fuel system. Try doing a search - this thread comes up every few months

the fuel capacity is definitely a weak point in the car. the Gt2 might have a 16gal tank since it has none of the AWD crap to deal with in the front.

Are you saying you don't think the TT has a 16.6 gallon tank? I was under the impression that gauge was just pessimistic. My owner's manual is definitely for a 996TT and not a GT2.
Hmm... I hate to be back again so soon, but interesting thing happened today:
Parked at about a quarter tank (just a barely perceptible smidge below). Came back after a long lunch, started it up, and got "Consider range on remaining fuel", needle as far down as it would go, and "--> mi" on the OBC read "---" instead of a number. I went to the closest possible gas station, sweating every second. And I filled it up and had to work to get 10 gallons in there.
Time for me to recalibrate that baby with the battery disconnect, maybe? Scared the **** out of me as I was in a quite crowded parking garage.

Renntech has the manual online, and on p. 210 it also lists the fuel capacity as 16.6 gallons. Has anyone ever actually run out of gas in their 996TT? If so, how much could you get in there then?

Any way to expand the fuel capacity...aux tank?
Has anyone added fuel capacity. I would love 25 gallons...perhaps losing a subwoofer, etc.

(fed law probably prohibits this...)
