RWD conversion?
RWD conversion?
I have seen many people mention going RWD on the 996TT when power is approaching 700 or higher. Why is this? What are the advantages? What if I only have 515BHP? Thanks.
It is fine with stock or stage 1 horsepower also. You do not need 700 hp to see the benefits.
The weight savings is the small difference (~80lbs), the big difference is that you have less drivetrain power loss from turning the additional front differential and front axles.
This has been discussed many times with differing opinions, mostly all positive. I figure that any mod that can make the car more like a GT2 is good, not that it will become one, there are more differences than just suspension and RWD, but it is one step closer.
The parts can always be re-installed if you like AWD better.

Just be careful, if you do not do the whole conversion you may not like it, LSD, corner balance etc.
I did not like just pulling the shaft one bit, enough to go back to AWD instead of going for a full conversion.
Results may vary.

Personaly i do not recomend this mod. It seems to be the current fad in the modding circles(996/997 turbo).people seem to do it becuase its an easy, fairly cheap mod they can add to their foum sig's!!!
I answered a tech call at work one day and the customer was asking about price/time frame on doing this conversion. I answered his questions and asked if he fully understood this modification and why he wanted it. He said yes and that he was told it would give his car more performance. As vauge as that!! I asked "more performance how??" and he said "im not sure,it will perform better..." . Unfortunatly im sure this would be the answer for a lot of ppl.
To do this job correctly, on top of all of the items removed you need some type of differential in the trans now, unless you like spinning 1 tire when you get on the power. The 80 or so pounds you remove will affect the handling more than the power. 90% of that wieght is going to be taken from the front of the car down low which will affect how your car handels. To get it right,as mentioned above, you should have the car put on a flat pad(corner scales) and have the corner wieghts dialed in.
Your car now being powered only from the rear will react totaly different than before and it will be a handful, espesially if you have more than stock power.
For most people, i dont recomend this mod, and unless your a professional driver, AWD will always be quicker on the track!!!

I also rode in a members car that was identical to mine and it felt slower as well. That was enough for me. I have gotten bashed for this before but still no solid evidence to the contrary, so I'm sticking with what I got.
Just try it out, it takes 20 minutes to try the shaft, but a RWD car with no LSD (limited slip diff) can be scary handling wise, just be careful, the PSM wont like to be on, and it's dangerous off.
I have also heard the PSM doesnt like the LSD, but I dont have any info on that.

This is really a rediculous mod imo, 80#s means squat on a 3500# street car with an amateur driver(as most of us probably are), gimme a break. If you hate awd that much you'd be better off selling the car and picking up a used gt2/3, they are plentiful.
Think long and hard before you do this, there's more to a GT2 than just pulling a shaft. Not to mention what it does to your resale value.

I partially agree (wouldnt say rediculous), but I have said all along to make it a legit 2wd car, you might as well buy a GT2 instead of trying to make one.
But if you are drag racing (which most of the guys who do it have a bigger focus on), then you will probably need to after so much power is added.
True! People should notice it immediately if they actually drive corners with the car
A really silly weight balance also...
LSD is great for even AWD Turbo!
(But yes, the Turbo can be done to RWD but it's NOT that fast and cheap job to do it properly...)
