Need a Pcar GURU!!!996TT chain noise VIDEO inside

Long story shorter, I bought this car last week from an individual and had a full PPI done. The PPI came back great except for a bit of engine noise. The shop said no big deal it is not very noticable. I figure he's being picky and trying to find something wrong with it.

Fast forward to today and I get the car off the truck it was shipped on and notice a odd noise coming from the rear end. At first I think it is the tag frame vibrating or an exhaust tip loose. I put some pressure on each and the noise is still there. I open the engine and hear it coming from somewhere on the passenger side of the engine.

It sounds like a rattle, maybe a heat sheild hitting something, it goes away above 2500 rpm's, it also sounds like something is dragging on a chain. They quote it as being a "little chain noise". I also hear a vibrating noise when in 5th or 6th and slowly accelerating at low RPM's. It is a lot more noticable in person than in the video. You can hear it more towards the end of the video.

Your help is greatly appreciated as I have been possesion of this car for less than 8 hours and am hoping it is not a big repair.

It is a X50 with @20K miles

Are you sure it is not the metal timing chain? All TTs have a metallic chain rattle due to this.

TT Tommy is infamous around these parts
really hard to tell from your video.

all tt's and gt3's have a bucket of bolts sound below about 1,800 rpm. intermidiate shaft, steel gears that drive the oil pumps, etc.

Lightweight flywheel adds to the rattling also.

All should be well over 2K rpm.

The car still pulls strong and drives great. The noise is just annoying. I am embarrassed at a light or driving slowly down the street slow (15 mph) because I hear all this noise. I don't remember my old turbo sounding like this. I'll try another video.

Yes the car is stock

It really sounds like a stick is dragging on a chain??????

Does the noise change with the rpm e.g. higher revs higher noise? Or is it only present at certain rpm’s and then completely goes away?

From what I have heard, it is rattling too fast to be heat shields. It is too early to rule them out though. How many miles are on the car?

The noise doesn't really change when you vary the RPM's but goes away after @2500. The car has 20K on it. I am really sick over this right now I don't want to have to get a new engine if it is something major.

Something inside the muffler? Take it in to the dealer for the final word. Good luck.

I was thinking exactly the same thing. have your tech check for possible loose muffler bearings.
