997 Turbo versus 996 Turbo S
Folks-
I can't figure out how to change my signature line, so it is inaccurate.
As you may know, I am addicted to 911s (NA and Turbos), and just happened across a relatively cheap ($150K) 08GT3RS. I am also in the process of buying (hopefully) a 996 2005 Turbo S, because I really loved my 2002 996 TT with X50. I just sold a GT Silver 997 TT. (You can tell I am nuts).
I got roundly trounced on the 997 board for asking this question - they believed the 997 Turbo was much better. I don't belive there i that much difference.
SO, here is the fundamental question - is it worth the additional to $25K buy yet another 997 Turbo? This won't even get the PCCBs which I consider a requirement, where the 996 Turbo S already has them. Also, every time Porsche releases a new model series (996, 997), the claims are that the new series is light years beyond the old one. IMHO, that is not always the case.
So, is the 997 TT that much better a car than a 996 TTS that it is worth the relatively high increase in price when buying a used car?
Thanks for letting me rave - Gerry

I own a 996 TT S cab and do like it very much, but the 997 TT is a better car. If I were to purchase another P-car it would be the 997 GT2 and not the 997 TT.
I can tell you that every 997 TT I have raced, I won. Who knows why, but my 996 TT S with a Revo flash is quicker than a stock 997 TT.

Kilgrt-
i have owned both, and I liked my 996 Turbo X50 better than my 997 Turbo.
I think that generational improvements are gradual, and much of the difference is in the looks of the car and in marketing.
I have never driven a 996 Turbo S, so it probably is like the 996 Turbo I owned.
When you really get down to modifying and racing these cars, the generation does not matter that much - you are changing how Porsche improved the new 997 (Sports Chrono, PASM, etc). Micheal Levitas's 1990 C4 with a modified turbo engine, full suspension, etc, can beat the heck out of most these cars.
And like what was said before - look at the price of the used 993 Turbo S - $170K? www.rpm.com, but the performance is not the issue with these rarities.

I agree, I probably will not switch to a 997TT. If I were to get a 997, it would be a GT2 or GT3.

I'm Glad you didn't take that the wrong way, sometimes its hard to tell ones true meaning thru text. Back to the point at hand, would I trade my 996 TT for a 997 TT?, well funny enough I did have a 997 TT , and 2 K later the car was sold..I think someone on the board bought it, yes it was a good car, fast comfort level was great.......but I truly felt disconnected from the car.To be honest and I know the 997 guys would disagree but I didn't find it to be as appealing. I know the 997 is a better car in technology terms, but if you don't enjoy driving it as much as the previous generation then whats the point? I guess this is why so many 993 guys prefer that generation over the newer advanced car. I say drive what ever puts the biggest smile on your face.

Also, the MSRP on these two 1997 Turbo S cars was $160,000.
