Talking Proper 6-speed launch

Ok folks...I've got a basically stock 996TT w/6-speed ( my friends state that my car has probably been flashed as I consistantly hit 1 bar without a problem). Now the question...Launching from dead stop...If I launch in 1st gear, I have about a nano-second before I'm on the rev-limiter...Usually, my best bet is to baby out of 1st and then nail it in 2nd....Is this normal? I have read of some people actually changing their gearing to assist in this...

Can anyone shed some light?

Well it seems with a flash he is not stock either so I will answer

I have a done a little drag racing with an AWD TT, my best launch is to slip the clutch from about 3.5k and it will take off the best from what I have found...

Yes launching from first gear takes some getting use to. Once you get use to it, the car is a rocket. I rev the engine to about 2000 rpm, slowly let the clutch out and once the car starts to move I dump the clutch and stomp on the gas. It is a very smooth transition from a dead stop and easy on the drive train.

Yea im still getting used to it - the RPM's shoot up so quickly its hard to bite - i usually baby it in 1st shirt into 2nd and hit the gas, as previously mentioned

i tried launching at 3k but i had horrible rear wheel hop...

2k sounds better, now you say you let the clutch out and then dump it? what does the mean; dump the clutch?

2k has to be better on the dt, 3k wasn't too high, but for what im trying to accomplish its just not needed...

Thanks

I only do this when I am racing from a stand still. Otherwise, I too baby the first gear and hit the gas once I have shifted to second.

It took me a while to perfect the quick getaway from a standstill, but now I can launch the car with minimal effort and nominal clutch damage, but time will tell. I do not down shift my car, I always use the brakes

I think he meant he slips the clutch then pops it I do the same. I have a stage 3 evoms clutch I slip then pop into first so im fully engaged with minimal chatter and wheel hop. i do this at around 3500 to 4000. I then quick shift into second.

I think short shifting to second is key (and difficult).

Interesting. I have always found the gearing to be slightly low.

Anyone try launching is second?

It would be a lot more abuse on the clutch with a 2nd gear start and I would also imagine slower.

Question psm on or off when launching? viper race?

when racing from a dead stop (0mph), is it better to have PSM on or off (light turns on on the PSM switch) and why?

Also, with a IA stage II setup (GIAC flash, EVO headers, diverter valves, Fabspeed Gen III exhaust, K&N air filter panel), can I beat a Viper SRT-10 from a dead stop? (assuming we have the same skill in driving). what about at freeway speeds?

I keep it on. I have never seen it activated while driving.

You might also look into a short shift kit. Won't help with rapid speed up but does let you shift faster and easier.

Good luck.
