Shifter broke off linkage HELP!

Shifter broke off linkage HELP!

I am so ticked off! This is the second time this shifter has broken off the shifter cable. Both times at the race track. Tonight I went to the dragstrip and the first run of the night, first gear, second gear, go to third and boom limp noodle in my hands. We tried to rig it back together and make another run same thing happened. We rigged it back together and limped home with our tail between our legs.

How embarrassing! Everyone at the track is probably laughing at the expensive Porsche that broke twice! Who has the best replacement and price to replace that plastic piece of crap that holds the linkage to the shifter?

How could Porsche use a piece of crap plastic piece to hold an important part of the car together? I am so embarrassed and dissapointed and ticked off!! CAN YOU TELL!

Any help is appreciated.

been there to many times as well

I have had this happen on the LIE. My recommendation is to put in the evo short shifter if you just want to avoid this with a little bit of a shorter shift. B & M for a much shorter shift. I haven't felt the ruf or techart. The advantage of the evo is that the needle bearings are changed. I don't think they are on the b and M. However the shift is really not that much shorter with the evo. I was thinking about this today and feel that the combo might not be a bad ideal.

plastic link replaced

I was under the impression that the evo replaced the plastic linkage while the b and m didn't??

Ok - B&M does not replace the cheap a$$ part shown in the pic...I can not believe they use this to begin with on the TT (It is a Boxster part!!). Anyone knoe if the GT2 and GT3 use that same part?? (there is actually two of them in the shifter assembly).
Also, anyone know of an aftermarket part to repace that??

The black plastic shift cable connector in my picture is replaced with a metal one in the EVO, but not the B&M. I have been told it is not uncommon to break the plastic connector. When I put in a B&M I always check both connectors for damage.

My pet goes to 2002. The plastic connector is 996 424 147 00. The same part is used on Boxster, 996, GT2, Turbo, and GT3.

For a GT3R there is a shift tower where the bushings and the shift cable connectors are made of metal instead of plastic. I do not think you can use this part however. Jeff

With the B&M/EVO type shifters you have LESS leverage on the cable ends. Every pound of force on the shifter handle will result in less force on the cables vs. stock. The Ruf/techart type kits shorten the lever ends on the transmission end of the cables. Because of the increased force needed to move the shorter lever arms the load on the cable ends will be greater. A Ruf kit should be more likely to break a stock cable end.
Why don't they use old fashioned direct mechanical steel rods? No room?

Yes that is the little bastard part that has broke on me twice and caused me a lot of heartache. How Porsche can put that cheap piece of plastic on the shifter to hold it to the linkage is beyond me.

So the EVO replaces that with a metal part correct? That is what I want, no more plastic is breaking on me.

The EVO shifter replaces the plastic part with a machined spherical heim joint. There is no way to break it. Sorry to hear about your bad experience at the track.

The heim joint will not work by itself. The hiem joint kit, which includes the shifter extension, is $130. Another problem with the shifter is the plastic bushings. This was the reason that we designed machined aluminum bearing cups with needle bearings to prevent breaking them as well. These are supplied with our complete SSK system for $230 or available separate for $110.

Just keep in mind that if you put in the extension/joint to get rid of the plastic shift connector then you will have a short shifter. Jeff

You are correct. This shortens the shift by 18-20%. We are in the final CNC machining stages of a replacement shift lingage that will replace the OE plastic linkage. They will be bullet proof and will have the available in a few weeks.
