996tt Winter Tire Recommendations ?

Okay, my ps2's dont grip very much below 50degrees IMO. Is it worth going to a winter tire ? Any suggestions ?

Dunlop M3.

I use this tire on the 996tt here in Norway.
I have tried it on snow, wet ice, wet and dry (cold) tarmac and it seems to work perfect on the tt.

I agree, they grip like velcro.

Pirelli Winter 240 SnowSport, 225/40/18 front, 265/35/18 rear on a ten inch rim (use a 15mm os so spacer). This is the Porsche approved (N3) set up. Very quiet, very good dry road handling, excellent in the snow. Available from Tirerack, ask for Damon.

Dunlops seem to be very popular...but my experience is limited to the Pirellis

You will only have a few options in 295s to fit the rears - i thought Michellin and Pirelli were the only ones making the crazy wide porsche rears in a true winter tire.

I run Pirelli 240s on stock wheels with no issues. TireRack shows the recommended wheel size for the 265 up to 10.5 inches.

Is the rubber compond different on winter tires or just tread pattern ? My stock all season tires on the mercedes c240 has so much grip in the cold its amazing. Whereas the 996tt ps2's are slick in the cold, hopping, sliding. . .

yeah one thing nobody told me about PS2s when I was buying them, was that their compound turns into stone at anything under 45*.

You got it. The issues are different rubber compound and tread pattern. More importantly is the width of the tires in the snow. The thinner the tires have better traction in the snow.
