Question engine sputter under hard throttle/wot

Hey everyone,

It seems like forever since I last used this site. Feels great to be back!

Anyways, the engine sputters when I accelerate hard or let the rpm get too high in hard acceleration/wot... I was told that it is probably the spark plugs that need to be replaced. The computer they hooked up to it said that cylinders 1,2,3, and 6 were misfiring. I was also told that I might need to get a MAF sensor as well. Any thoughts? I didn't know spark plugs were so crucial in the cars performance. I recently did the following mods and I want to put the power to the pavement!!!! Will the spark plugs fix my problem?

1) GIAC ecu flash
2) Agency cold air intake (Vivid Racing)
3) EVOMS diverter valves (Imagine Auto)
4) EVOMS k24 headers (Imagine Auto)
5) Fabspeed Gen III exhaust system (Imagine Auto)
6) Sachs/GT2 stage II clutch kit (Imagine Auto)
7) Toyo T1R Proxes 315/25/19

I am broke now... I'm hoping that I don't have to fix/replace anything else.

Thanks to everyone in advance for replying!

If it idles fine and is fine up to say......4000 or 5000 rpm and bucks and sputters then is's 99% sparkplugs.....and probably not (in my experience) a mass air..as the odds of both going out at the same time are pretty near impossible....

i was told that the MAF sensor might be going bad because of the exhaust and the other mods that are making my car push more load... thus wearing out the MAF?

thanks again in advance!

in my experience, the plugs just go out on these cars w/o much warning. i've been stranded twice now (with 2 different performance packages.)

fix the plugs and then drive it. MAF is probably fine.

Bryant: I just went thru a series of random misfires on two separate occasions...only 23K on the car. It ended up being the MAF. Luckily, mine was covered by CPO warranty.

Who did the install on your upgrades? Plugs are also suspect....how many miles on the current set of plugs?

If these mods "wear out the MAF" wont the new MAF wear out too? Doesn't make sense to me.

OK...enough is enough...WTF is wearing out the MAF mean...it is a simple part that has a film and a sensor (electronic) it measures the air flow by converting the temperature differential from one side to the other...what can deteriorate...It either works or you fry the electronics...that is it...

Change Your Plugs!

Bryant, We have the same mods, same year car and about the same mileage. You should have changed the plugs when you did the Fabspeed. I installed new plugs and have crisp revs to 7K. Now the bad news-it's alot of work to get at them. (You have to remove the fender liners, rear bumper, inter coolers, heat shields and coil packs) Index your plugs for comparison the next time you change them. IA has instructions on their website. Have Fun!

More flow will not 'wear out' MAFs, of course.

However, once you start increasing airflow, MAFs that are marginal may start having increased 'issues' with maintaining proper linearity- once the readings fall outside the acceptable range, limp mode, etc.

I agree with plugs. How many miles on these?

Bad car to be broke on...

I believe these plugs are the original plugs... 60k miles on the car. THANKS TO THOSE THAT REPLIED. 6 Speed rocks!

Chuck: I hope all is well! we need to grab coffee sometime again soon. Take care buddy.

How much does a MAF sensor cost if I were to get one? I'm hearing different prices... Anyone know?

60K on the original plugs? No wonder if runs bad.
2001-2002 call for a Bosch FR6 LDC plug change at the 30k service. Later models the plug change is not part of the 30k service, but that does not mean you should not change them out.

It's easy to do at home in about 4-1/2 hrs if you are slow.

If you do decide on a MAF, be sure to get the CORRECT Bosch P/N "0 280 218 009". See Kevin at UMW. He sells the correct MAF and plugs.
