break fluid overflow under hood leaking

noticed a small puddle of oil under the front of the car. Took it to shop and was told that it was the overflow drain from the oil reservoir, just under the front hood.

mechanic lowered oil level from Top, to medium. seems to be ok.

has anyone else ever had this oil overflow issue? I think it overflowed when i was doing some fast and hard start and stops.

thanks.
AJ.

Your post is somewhat confusing. In the title you say brake fluid overflow.
Then in the post you say you found OIL under the front of the car from the " overflow drain from the oil reservoir, just under the front hood."

I will assume you are refering to the brake fluid the whole time, as there is no oil overflow drain, especially at the front of the car. It is possible you boiled the brake fluid causing it to push out past the cap. Just for refference, this part is your supply reservoir, not an overflow tank.

supply reservoir for brake fluid leaking

thanks for helping me clarify Derik. It was the supply reservoir for brake fluid that was leaking (under the front hood).

I really don't think the brake fluid could have boiled. The temp was not that hot that day, nor did I push the car hard enough to get it to that temp. I find it very unlikely, yet i suppose possible.

I'm guessing it must have been the hard starts and stops I did, (when the reservoir was at the highest level permitted.

thanks for clarifying.

Anyone else ever experienced the same?

AJ.

Huuh!

How is the Clutch Connected to the Brake System? I thought the Clutch used the common fluid of the Power Steering...

Couldn't be the clutch

yea, it couldn't be the clutch actuator. The leak is definitely from the brake fluid reservoir.

BTW clutch is perfect. Car only has 14k miles.

I know you said it couldn't be the clutch-power steering, but I think that you should check again. There are 2 reservoirs up front. The one on the firewall under the plastic cover is the clutch-power steering. If it overflows, it leaks out through the hole under it, and shows up on the plastic covers underneath and on the floor. Brake fluid reservoir is more in the trunk and there is no hole for it to run out. If the fluid is green, it's clutch fluid. If it's the same color as your brake fluid, I'm wrong.

I had a similar problem, it maybe the same thing. As it turned out is was the pump in the engine compartment that was producing to much pressure causing the over flow. It was the clutch resivour not brake fluid.

clutch-power steering!!! IT will probably be the one with the olive green screw cap on it right??
IT WILL PROBS BE THAT!! Mine started to sweat...then it got worse!
The clutch felt great for about 14000 kms!!! yes that long...then I noticed that it felt a littel weird and that raised a concern on my part... DUMB coz i let it sweat out for a long time... I even bought the fluid which is expensive stuff let me tell ya.... and just filled the pump in rear!! talk about dumb moves.... car is in shop now.. i drove it till winter hit..

The first post sail "oil" not fluid so I made an assumption is was the Pentosin reservoir not brake fluid.

Awesome insight thanks everyone

I have definitely determined that the lead was from the reservoir under the hood, but NOT the one on the firewall under the plastic cover (the clutch-power steering.)

Instead it was definitely from the Brake fluid reservoir that is easily accessed from under the hood. Not nececessary to remove the plastic cover closer to the firewall, where the OTHER reservoir is located.

My mistake in using the term "oil". Sorry for my vagueness. lol

My mechanic who looked at it (decent porsche, Bmw repair place) said he couldn't find any reason for the leak. other than believing the level was simply too high. Oh well.

I'll be currious to see if it happens again once I bring the beast out of storage. But seing as it was fine for the last month of driving before winter lockup, i'm holding out hope that my mechanic friend is right.

Only time will tell. Thanks all.

A.J. ,
Did you make any changes to the brake system prior to this happening?? Brake pads, add fluid?? If there were no changes made since the last few times you drove the car without this problem and you didnt add fluid, we can safely say it isnt just a simple overfill problem. What is the history of the brake system on your car??
