anyone with a police scanner ?
Seems to me to be a lot simpler to watch the rear view mirror.....however when participating in group "brisk drives", your visibility becomes much more noticeable and conducive to a call to the local gendarme.
I have a uniden scanner with beartracker. It will do digitally encrypted trunked systems. It also comes preloaded with info for different state troopers and can be updated via a computer.
I havent mounted it in my car yet, but i will soon. I have just tried it out a couple of times in my house and it works great with MPD and Tennessee State troopers.

I think the scanner is a good idea. I know around here back when I used to go out at night for group drives and attended all of the car events locally the cops would constantly harass us and kick us out of one parking lot or area to another. And if they were really bored they would try and write tickets to cars parked in certain areas, etc. The scanner at least could tell us if there was a call made in about our location and give any possible vehicle descriptions, and it gave me the heads up to politely leave the group at the next exit, or to leave the parking lot before the cops arrived to hand everyone tickets.
I'm not for breaking the law by any means, but at least in our small town, there isn't much else for them to do but pull people in nice cars over so if I can avoid that and a scanner can help me get that information i'm all for it.
Is there anyway around the new encrypted digital channels? I have heard various posts on this forum that there is a way to decode it but no one every elaborated on that fact.
Cheers!

ok I usually dont put my 2 cents in on threads like this since my car is taken to the track in a trailer so hard to get a ticket but.....
just want to know the mindset of someone trying to go 100+mph on a public street?
to he!! with the ticket what about all the uncontrolled variables??
kids, rabbits, deer, people, blow out, blind corners whatever.
we occassionally hit a deer at the race track!!
Is it just a kinda "bad boy" mentality, you against the "man" or what, I just dont get all the electronics to "go fast?"
it is like spending hours preparing a cheat sheet for a test instead of just studying for the test.
please no flaming but some honest input as to why or the purpose of excessive speeds on public roads really would be interesting to me.
also if one wants to comment it would also be interesting to know how many "speeders" have ever driven there car at a track or have any proven skills to handle a car out of control at high speeds?
also how many have never gotten a speeding ticket?
good or at least interesting stuff for the rest of us to know.
thanks
tom

Tom, thats a great post and I am intrested in some of the same things. I normally only go 10-15 over the posted speed limit if the road is empty. If there is traffic I am normaly the idiot in the Porsche in the right lane barely speeding. I find myself staying with the flow of speeding trafic better in my suv than the Porsche.
I own a radar detector for those times I am in the 15 over area. But I do live in a rural area and have found myself on very wide empty roads where at times I will go over 100.
I'm interested in how fast the speeders go? I would not drive 140+ on the interstate for the reasons you mentioned. How many people really do that?
As far as the scanner goes, I do not have one in my car, but at the office we have a portable unit we pass around the sales staff to hear the police dispatches for home break ins (I own a home security company). If the in car units have as much activity as the unit we use I would find it nearly impossible to use effectively on a long term basis. There is just so much going on in our area of one million people that a city larger would have to have so much more activity the filtering the speed traps or dispatches that apply to a certain area would be very tough.
I may have to try driving with the scanner to see how it works.

well I also have a V-1 but dont need any speeding tickets to help my car insurance out.
We all want and need to stretch the legs of these cars but with the ablity of these cars it is tough to do on the street.
I was at VIR last week with a 1 mile long backstraight. Speeds up to and over 170 lap after lap.
where else can you safely do that??
for reference here is how I have spent my $ upgrading my dash.

As noted above, it is a lot more complicated to monitor now but it can still be done in most areas with the right equipment. Even digital P25 transmissions can be monitored if they are not encrypted, which many aren't. I would first check out the information at www.radioreference.com for the areas you are interested in. Then you can look at the radio models that will work. For example, the Uniden BCT 7-8-15 models can't monitor digital but the Uniden 396T does. Don't forget about the old CB radio if you are on the Interstates, the truckers still give "bear" reports on ch. 19.
regardless of your intentions i like to know whats going on around me

Tom,
I track myself primarily to improve my road skills. Was at TWS yesterday.
here in Houston we have huge 10 lane Highways. At night when there is little traffic we will go out in a packs of 4. All cars will slow to 60 and we make sure that we have a large patch of clear road ahead of us. The 2 lead cars will pull into the far left and right lanes and the 2 cars in the back will go on 3 honks to 140 or so.
We are all professionals (Docs, lawyers, and business owners) and we always shut down and risk losing the race rather than jeopardize anyone. We all have radar, usually V-1.

I don't think anything anyone can say in oposition without an "off-topic" situation breaking out....
I'd just like to say OFF-TOPIC and move right along 145 in the fastlane...

Oh, and yes I've tracked but tracking is nothing compared to a public highway. Most track hounds can drive and respect others moves and passes, when there is an open highway
let her rip. Most people who complain are those who don't want to take a chance, it's sort of like J-walking, you can do it safetly and get away so long as the cops and others are
not around to run you over. On the other hand if you do it when cars are blowing by you'll increase your chances of an accident or ticket. My first time going over 150 was on a
public highway. I've also got caught doing 125 in a 35..... I paid a good $700 fine with a good attorney. Big deal.

Just speed with a group of other cars and all of you have a 2 way radio. Have a look out in the front and rear while you speed in the middle. Then all of you get to have fun, no tickets.
