Basically - 996TT grills has a shark fin like (vertical slits) which pretty much enclose the rear bumper side vent. The 996 GT2 are more open and doesn't have the shark fin slits. If you look at any GT2 and TT rear bumper closely on Ebay or where ever - you'll see what I mean.

I think you got something wrong here! The rear bumper on a GT2 and 996tt are identical. I think you might be looking at a C4S rear bumper which has the vertical slits you are describing and thats because it doesn't have intercoolers so it doesn't need the ventilation.
