you would be surprised sometimes what you hear and what the problem really is... I only offered a simple cheap way of testing.... I have been fooled myself a few times....

1. get a garden hose about 2 feet long

now, star the car.... when you hear the noise.. take the towels and cover up the exhaust for a few seconds at a time... 5 seconds is fine... have another person try to locate the the noise...
Once you located the area... you can let go if you want to of the towels and take a garden hose and place one end at the location you think its coming from... and the other rend put it next to your ear...
You will soon locate the sound... trust me.

good luck.
