Can anyone with a 996TT thats had a MAF failure let me know if the sensor looked as good as new when examined or was covered in crap ?

Also how old was it before it went

Cheers

Andy

Oh boy I think you will see lots of replies, after reading many many posts on this , I bought one for when mine goes..Its not if but when. I don't think they look bad and also I have read where fellow members have replaced 3 in 3 months. What is your doing to make you think you need one, or is this a general question?

Cool

Code 115 on the DME. I also get hesitation at lows revs and a very slight lumpy idle

It will look like new. They can be blown out in a couple of miniutes under the right conditions. If yours is covered with crap, perhaps check your aftermarket filter for too much oil. A MAF cleaning a dry filter may fix your problems.

I think your code is not MAF but ECT( engine coolant temperature ) Sensor circuit.

Not 100% sure about the code. I'm sure it said about the air mass film sensor ?????
Mine looks like new on the inside but is 7 years old.

Sorry my not knowing much on this subject with these cars but why do most of you guys still run mafs? Aren't there standalones that let you switch over to map sensors? I would think that since most of everyone on here is paying top dollar for their cars and tons of money extra the best engine management systems would be a no brainer. Once again I don't know much about these cars so I am not trying to step on peoples toes just seems silly to just used a reflashed ecu when you are trying to make 600+hp on a 150k car.

antonio....there are a number of tuners with MAF "solutions". The problem is not a simple one and unfortunately MAF sensors are part of the original Bosch code, so difficult to program out. I'm sure gov't epa/dot restrictions play a part in this scheme as well.

That's the common misconception. These are not 150K cars, and most never were. This always pisses me off, cause I didn't pay for a 150K and I don't want to pay for that kind of attitude when it comes to after market enhancments or maintenance. Total bull****.

Well , I am not disagreeing with you TXGOLD, these cars do cost 150K + here in Canada.
You are 110% correct in the attitude.

Antonio your right you don't know much about these cars with a statement like that. You have to understand these cars are very easy to tune via a reflash, but thats easy for me to say, lots of Companies and individuals have already done the R&D for me to say that.I ran A DFI (standalone) in my quarter mile car because thats what was the best for that application. The Porsche DME is very sophisticated and works very very well. 600 HP on these cars are nothing in todays standards and yes its done with a MAF. You should go thru some of the posts to understand why these cars eats MAF's, some fail because of external circumstances, and lets face it..some simply fail. I'll make you a deal you try and tune a standalone on your TT motor , and lets us know how that turns out. Thanks but I would rather replace MAF's then the motor

I don't want to come off as an ***** or anything but I made 793rwhp in my z with a maf, then 850+ with the standalone. I wouldn't even dare to tune it, I would just bring it to someone like jeff evans of evans tuning and have him do it. I just see the same thing with the z's people thing the jwt ecu reflash or the zem is the greatest thing, aem realeased the ems for the z 2 years ago and it blows anything either of them can do. But once again not to sound like a ***** I do need to research and learn more about the car before I can make a statement. When I build mine you better bet your *** I am going to be running a standalone though.

You didn't come off as a *****, I understand your point somewhat.I am not necessarily disagreeing with you, but there are a few cars here with the same if not more HP then your previous cars that run MAFs. All is well.
