Would you consider the 996TT a supercar?

I think the 993TT is more of a supercar than the 996TT. The 996TT is very much the first high volume production line turbo. The 993TT was hand assembled, now it's pretty much all high tech robots putting them together.

If you want to go with there were fewer 400 hp cars in 1996 (Viper, ZR-1, Diablo, maybe thats it) than in 2000, OK.......

But the hand-built crap doesn't fly. Edsels and DeLoreans were hand built too. While you might like to think that craftsmanship meant more on hand-aasembled cars, the truth is humans can't keep tolerances worth a crap, and a hand assembled car relies alot on how the workers felt that day (pissed, sore, hungover, Monday, etc.) hence the old line don't buy a car built on a Monday or Friday.

No secret why cars routinely stay on the road past 100k miles now.....

I had a VT roadster lambo, a 360 modena, 2 twin TT espirit Lotus's... etc... ALL F*CKING JUNK....
Don't even get me started.... with that said, the Porsche is a true supercar... you can take it to the grocery store in the morning and be at the track by 11 am... come back and go to the movies that same night...

I say no.

I also say no to :

Viper
Z06
997 TT
Gallardo
GT-R

Why? Because a supercar is the best of the best in EVERY aspect, meaning interior and exterior qaulity. You cant have pleather garbage seats like a Vette, cheap interior like the Viper and Vette, and plastic interior like the GT-R Vette and Viper.

The problem nowadays is that there are several budget car offering supercar performance. So anything that runs 11 second 1/4 mile and sub 4 sec. 0-60 is called a supercar. Doesnt fit to me.

The true supercar is a dying breed.

Well, have you ever owned one? I had more then one... and when you realize how poorly they are put together and furthermore how they break down repeatedly.. it is only then that you may change your mind...
I can get into a long list of problems I had with my $300K supercar... and I can even add the list from my 2 best friends Peter and Jack who also had 2 lambos... trust me on this one... it's a hit or miss... and usually a miss...
My Modena was so F*cked up that the F car dealership didnt even know how to fix it... misfires, shaking, etc.... so I couldn't take it anymore after 5 times of repeated visits tot he dealer.. and a whole summer lost to mechanic failure.... I called my friend who tows cars for a living, I used my girlfriend's lipstick because that's what I had handy and I wrote a nasty note on the windshield... thru the keys in the car and never saw it again... that's a Ferrari supercar for you...

Every car has problems, you want to count the number of Z06 engine failures, column locks, or the 911 TT 2nd gear pop outs?

I'm not saying there arent posers out there that may seem like a supercar on the outside, but the fact of the matter is that low volume car producers are usually the ones making the supercars and generally have smaller budgets to work with, hence the quality issues, and they dont put out as many cars so one bad apple takes a much bigger toll on the overall quality statistics. So in essence using the best quality materials doesnt mean you've had the best developement budget, which could hurt the dependability of the car. Expensive stuff breaks too.

I havent owned one, but I have been around enough that have never had a problem.

This thread is not worth fighting over.....

if it is super to you...it is super. If not, enjoy that point of view. To me and all of my friends a porsche turbo is something special. Nuff said.

To me a supercar has a societal "reputation"...it is in the folklore if you will (it is inherently ridiculous at some level....cost/speed/danger/acceleration...).

a 911 turbo has that

many ferraris have that (many do not...the 328's don't, the daytona's do..)

duessenbergs in their day...yep

the original v16 caddies...yep, some

the current bugatti, yep

current bentleys, nope

current GM products...nope...the ZR1 maybe

an AC cobra....not sure...the 5+ million dollar one by Shelby himself (his car)...yep

to me the old countach...yep, the new Audi ones, nope (too sterile)...not sure why I feel that way

It is too early to tell by this yardstick if the GT-R is one, but it might become one in time....the skyline legend is real....

I do agree that it is a dying breed ...the most super of supercars today is the Bugatti IMHO.

Anyway, let's not fight. Opinions ...everyone has one.....

Supercar (stock) - no
Exotic - no

But its timeless going down the highway, and its a gorgeous car all around. The reason I don't consider it a supercar is because of the GT3 which I believe to be more of the Porsche "race car."

I gotta admit though, closing the door on my 996TT sure doesn't sound as solid as an air-cooled 911.

all I can say is that I went back to a Porsche after having living nightmares with Italian sports cars. I mean really bad experiences. Both of my friends had similar issues.
so to me my car is a supercar.

How can you question of the 911 Turbo is a "supercar" or not, it set the standard/bar in 74' and has been doing so for the last 35 years

I agree with Marksi, the Italians are **** and always have been and none of the other big names (Pagani, Zonda, etc etc) have been around near as long

Well it can't with the motorized window closer can it? It creates a better seal. I understand the nostalgia, but cars are engineered much better today. I love alot of 60s cars but know they were/are buckets of bolts.

Even Ferrari joined the modern age, and the modern cars (360, 430, etc) are much more reliable.
