996 TT vs Big AMG
996 TT vs Big AMG
Was driving my TT home from work the other day. One of the first really nice Spring days here in Connecticut and the traffic wasn't too heavy. Up pulls a nice looking 500 series AMG MB with a young guy driving it. He pulls next to me at a red light and smiles like a lunatic at me. Light turns green and he smokes his tires. I mean he really spins them hard.
I figure what the heck and we place slice and dice through the traffic for a few miles. My TT is slightly worked and pretty fast, but I had no idea those big MBs put out that much power. I stayed in front of him, but no by much.

stock to stock ... my butt dyno feels like that my CLS55 has much much much more power (450 tq vs 516 tq) ... not to mention the RWD vs. AWD probably has something to do with it .. at least that's what my butt dyno tells.. .but after a pair of new snails on the 996TT... well then ...

far, FAR too close...I actually think the m5 may be faster...if only by a couple of hairs.
That said, from a dead stop and both us spec, the 996tt should have it to about 80-90 mph clearly...but then I think the two would start flip flopping at that point...
If the two did a 100 or so mph roll, the results would be relatively speaking embarrassing for the turbo (that doesnt mean turbo sitting still, but the fact that a 4 door stock sedan is inching ahead seems a bit up there to me...haha)
Part of the equation is just how glorious the 5.0l V10 is that bmw actually put some real R&D into...its PHENOMENAL over 100 and still amazing under...

If a stock 996TT is faster than a stock E55 then no way is a stock M5 faster than an 996TT.
I have owned both a stock E55 and a stock 996TT and my E55 felt much faster..

I have owned both as well, and the stock E55 is no where close to the stock TT. Maybe the torque coupled with the larger sedan gave it the illusion in being quicker, but its not. I have been in sechangs M5, and I think that car is significantly quicker than an E55.
Guys,
"Feel" and butt-dynos don't mean anything. "Feel" is only a function of torque and gearing...but it doesn't accurately correlate to acceleration capability.
Stock to stock to stock, in real world conditions...the E60 M5 is quicker than a E55, and a 996TT is quicker than both of them. Videos and 1/4 mile trap speeds prove this to be the case.
But the E55 will "feel" the fastest due to it's mega-torque numbers.

I was merely stating torque numbers ... and more of my butt dyno ... the AMG def felt like it had more pull when my X50 was stock .. perhaps its the AWD vs. RWD ...
I'm sure with topend speed .. well ...
Perhaps my X50 was just a lil weakling .. although ... I'm sure YOUR 996TT will give any AMG (in fact pretty much most of the cars on the road) a spanking ...

FWIW I never came across a modded M5 that could come close to keeping up with my E55.
Also in the 1/4 mile my car ran a 11.5. When I sold it, it was easily running low 11s. I have yet to see a M5 run those times.. Even with NOS.
And here is a video of my E55 racing a highly modded M5.

Regardless..stock to stock...the M5 is quicker than the E55...and the 996TT is quicker than both.
