B&M install problem...

Hi guys...

I'm posting for a friend who just installed his B&M shifter in Hong Kong.

The shop in HK has never done a B&M shifter, so this was their first. The car engages reverse, but the rear reverse lights don't come on.

Is there some kind of adjustment that is needed? I was looking at my instructions and under Step 29 it says, "If the shifter does not self center during extreme condition usage, additional loosening of Set Screw (EE) may be needed."

Is that what needs to be adjusted. Mine doesn't have a problem...I always thought reverse light switch is in the transmission and wouldn't have anything to do with a short shifter.

Any idea guys???

Thanks in advance.

I doubt it, if the linkage is not adjusted properly you may not be in gear all the way. Did they mark the cables before they put it all together? If not they will need to adjust the two rods until they have it right. There is a 7.00 tool from Porsche that snaps in and centers the handle, but this can be done by the eye. Also are you sure the lights were working before.?

The reverse lights don't have anything to do with the shifter install. Unless the car is not going into reverse, then it may be a cable adjustment problem.
On another note I wonder if the shifter not centering during extreme usage could explain what my B&M does on occasion. Always at the track during a later run session the shifter seems to hit a gate and has to be forced into gear. Which is a real PITA when tracking out after a high speed turn ... I actually took it out until I can come up with a more reliable setup.

He isn't sure if they were working before. I had him check the bulbs, and they are fine.

What else would cause reverse light failure?

The switch in the tranny would do it. There is a pin that pushes up in the switch when the reverse shaft is moved. Chances are there is a switch problem or the wiring has moved off of the switch. I would bet unless the car is not fully in reverse there is an issue else where. That is why I asked if it worked before. He probably didn't notice it until after the other stuff was done.

Thanks Stephen...

That is what I was thinking too. How do you exactly center the handle? Is it done by adjusting the two cables?

Yes, the alignment of the cables dictates all of the adjustments.
