Tire Advice Needed

I'd like to replace the stock Pirellis ( 225/40/18 & 295/30/18 ) on my 2001 996 TT with MPS2s.
Tire Rack suggested 235's & 315's. My car has an X73 suspension. Will they fit my stock rims? Will they rub due to my lower suspension? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

235/40R-18 and 315/30R-18 - no problem assuming 18x8.5 front and 18x11 rear with the right offsets (stock offset) and reasonable lowered ride height. I run NT01s in this size on stock turbo twist wheels.

I just bought the MPS RIBS for my car, swapping out the Pirellis I had... I can't comment enough on the difference just in lack of road noise. I was amazed at how quiet this car is now... I stuck with the stock 295/35 rear 225/40 front 18inch sizes.

Road manners are much better as well...

Tires

The 235/40 No Problem w/stock rims, had them on my car, but for the rear I used the 295/30, but I think the 315 will work. Tony hope this helps a little.

I have heard that you want to keep the diameter of both front and back nearly the same and if you go 235 in front you need to go with 315 in back if they will fit in order for the diameters to match. This is not my experience just what I have heard.

That is absolutely not true... The 235s will work with 295s, 305s or 315s depending on the exact diameter of each tire... You have to do the math and come up with "within" 3% of the same diameter front to rear.

I run 235 front MPSCs and 295 rear MPSCs at the track with zero issues.

Cool, so you can run the 235 mich up front with the 295 mich in back since the front is 25.4 and the back is 26.1 and that is 3%.

Will a 245 fit on a stock rim with stock spacing without rubbing in front. I hear of guys running 265's and 255's, but I am not sure if they have modded their cars.

also will 315's fit on stock rims in back with no mods?

you running those tires with stock wheels and no camber or rolled fender? That would be impressive.

I keep on hearing different stories. Some people have rubbing issues others dont.

The rear of a TT needs all the help it can get. I've got 315x25x19 on the rear lowered about an 1". I rolled the lips...no rubbing. Rolling the lips is no big deal.

To retain stock feel, I would keep it the same size. The tires will come out a little bit.

Tom has roled fenders and most likely camber plates... I didn't run the 245 on mine and didn't do the math, so you'll want to do that, but the bottom line is there can only be up to 3% difference in tire diameter. Beyond that, it's up to you... I chose not to run the 315s I had, as they rubbed the inner fender close to the boost hose, and that was that... I've never had problems with the 295s and my car is making more power than a lot on this board... Others here can attest to how my car handles when it's out on course lapping..

Mike, thanks. Makes sense, the fact that you are running slightly larger in front probably helps point the front end better and adds a little weight up there. I was only thinking of 315's because I found a really good deal on a set, but I'll probably stick with 295's back there and go up to 235's in front or maybe even 245's if they will work. Doesn't seem like much of a difference, but I certainly do not want to have rubbing issues. Probably stick with 235's in front. Oh and Mike, a little birdie told me about your car, sounds like a beast, did you get one of Kevins tranny deals. I wish I had money right now.

Duanne, if you hadn't of lowered the rear or rolled the lips, wold those tires rub?

I haven't jumped on Kevin's tranny deal yet, because I've been toying with selling mine, but would consider it later in the spring/summer once I recoup from the last 6 months of upgrades... Putting the added width of tire up front helps me make the front stick better on turn in and allows for a bit better balance with my personal setup. I'm only running 1.5 negative camber up front and 2.0 in the rear, with the sways set on the middle setting, with PSS9s set at 1 on the back and 3 up front! So for me, that seems to work pretty darned well.

Mike
