13.8 Mpg, Wtf?!?
13.8 Mpg, Wtf?!?
I've had my 996tt for about 6 months now and never really paid attention to the computer's estimate of mileage, but I finally recorded my odometer reading and gas usage and came up with the same number my computer had: 13.8 MPG.
Now some people on this board are claiming 18 or 20 or more MPG, which is what my Acura MDX SUV gets. I don't drive conservatively, but I'm not overly aggressive either. I'll give it WOT on straight roads that I'm familiar with and where I know there won't be cops, but the rest of the time I'm in traffic and putting around town at the same speed as everybody else.
I've heard from some people that chipping the car can actually increase fuel efficiency. Can anyone confirm that and other than staying completely out of the turbo, what can I do to get closer to 18 or so MPG?

Hi....On my way to texas last oct. it was telling me 32 mpg....I would drive about 300 or so miles and add 10 gallons to fill her up! All highway at 80mph and up. Stop and go kills that number. Tim
I agree I did not buy mine expecting great MPG... but am I the only one thatfeels gas price is no doubt taking a toll on the economy... its getting expensive to fill up my rover now a days.. What I was spending a month on gas is now about 2 weeks worth... its getting out of control.. I feel really bad for the normal working class... and for young drivers.. its a shame.. I really dont see the USA getting out of this recession anytime soon with gas prices where they are and only going up from here..
And yeah, I didn't expect great gas mileage either, but less than 14mpg? That seems really poor when my SUV which has just as many cylinders and weighs 1,000 pounds more gets 25% more miles to the gallon.
No one has mentioned an ECU upgrade as affecting mpg. Can anyone speak definitively about that? It seems counter intuitive to me, but the rumor is programming can improve performance and mileage.

I range from 14 to 18 depending on the right foot action.
I recently filled up and reset the computer then drove 150 miles with the cruise on at 80 mph and recorded 27 mpg. OMG it was boring
I agree with most. Drive it hard and have fun and don't look at the computer.

Traffic really hurts mpg. Also, a lot of people on this forum spend a majority of the miles on the freeway cruising around. This would give them significantly higher numbers since they aren't building any boost while a maintaining a moderate throttle position. I get about 16 with just city driving and the occasional straightaway floor. Getting modifications like intake could possibly alter the air fuel ratio making you run a little richer, thus more gas to air. Likewise, getting an ecu can affect mpg depending on what kind of tune you have. If you run a little lean, you would end up getting slightly higher numbers than usual. However, it pretty much comes down to your driving style. Try and accelerate more gradually and keep boost under .1 bar.
