3 Fast, 3 Furious

Several months ago, I was cruising down 101 late one evening after visiting family in SF and on the way home down mid-peninsula. Had my son with me. I was going 70 on the fast lane with cruise control. A ricer eased infront of me with 6-7 car lengths ahead. Few seconds later, another ricer went along side me. Then the ricer infront started slowing down gradually. I slowed down proportionately. That's when I noticed the lights behind me is not slowing down but keeping the same pace. The ricer next to me was also slowing at my pace.

My son also noticed and asked me what are they doing?
I answered him 4 sec later and said they're trying to box us in.

At that point, the gap between the ricer infront and the ricer next to me was <4 cars length and sort of in a holding pattern, with the trailer right up my ***.

I could've kept going like that for awhile, knowing my son is next to me. The ricers will probably get bored with me and take off eventually.

One minute gone by (seemed like an eternity) and I was nearing my exit. I have no idea how much longer will these bozos keep playing this game. So I decided to take action. My son knew because I gently slipped into 3rd and raised the RPM a bit.
My son said "don't do it dad".

Next I...

What would you have done?

That was not a comfortable position to be in.
I thought I was in a movie.

Next you...goosed it cut over all the lanes and took your exit before the ricers knew what hit them???

I was worried that by the time enough boost is built, the ricer next to me would've jump and close the gap. I was praying that he wouldn't side swipe me and hurt my kid.

It's the first time I really floored 3rd and held it there, starting around 4k rpm I believe. My gosh. I was surprised at how fast the TT jumped out of there. As I was passing the ricer infront I saw how surprised he was too.

Next thing you know I have ricers all over my tail and I was dodging traffic ahead. They were able to stay behind me with 3 car lengths or so for the next mile and half.

When I slowed to my exit, one of them had to burst infront of me in the exit lane for a few seconds, flashed his lights, then took off.
I was worried I'd have to deal with an ugly scene when my kid's around.

If the road was emptier, I wonder how long could they stay behind me, or could they even pass me beyond 130.

You did the right thing by getting yourself and your son out of that hairy situation. After all your son is way more important than your car. Ricers like that pisses me off that’s why I drive with a bat in my car. Personally I would have stopped the car on the freeway and see how those monkeys would of reacted to that move and if they had stopped as well....then play ball

I would have slowed down to 10 mph.... very quickly, then nailed it out of there.

that's my guess anyway... hard to say what I would have done w/o actually being there.

It does sound like they were trying to box you, to what ends who knows. Either way, sounds like you did right by getting out of that situation.

Heya Colin,

It's too bad that people like to get in your face etc... Happens to me as well. Usually what they want is a "show". In other words to see you get on it etc... You did the right thing by just getting out of there.

Thank God that it's over and that you got yourself and your son out of this. You could beat yourself to death by trying to think of whatelse you could have done so don't do it. Just be thankfull that whatever game these guys were playing, you reacted in a diffrent way then they thought you would and got out of harms way.

Think you're right. It's just their in-your-face way of asking for a race or to play chicken.

I see it as the price of owning a super-anything-car. They'd never bother doing that if I'm in my Rover for sure.

It's too bad but it's just the way the cookie crumbles I've not come from wealth or anything like that (my family was rather poor to be frank) but living in London I was surrounded by insane wealth. When it came to cars or anything else, I was never jealous or disrespectul. In fact, I could and did appreciate someone else's good fortune/tastes from a distance. Some people figure that being mean and/or just disrespectful is the way to "get back" at someone elses good fortune and property

Where I came from, trust me they'd bother you for a Rover!!
