I don't think any PCA chapter or instructor would accept a camera mount that is not physically affixed to a harness bar, roll bar or equivalent (with the additional requisite camera strap). I certainly would not use this type of mount in my car during a driving event.

Great selection here:
http://store.yahoo.com/cinemasupplies/succupmoun.html

I already have the IOPort camera mount on my roll bar but I wanted some additional versatility so I bought this one from the above link:

http://store.yahoo.com/cinemasupplies/gripexsucvac.html

It is on sale for $95.00. I should have mine in 3 days.

Now that is cool. Video w/ the camera mounted on the side of the car towards the rear viewing the front wheel would be a really cool perspective...Only issue I can think of is wind noise...That will be a real problem w/o proper dB attenuation and wind screen for microphone....Best solution would be an outboard mic kept inside of the car connected by a wire to a jack on the camera...if equipped to get the sound w/o wind from inside the car and the vid from outside the car...

Can you say pro mini dv camera...like the $5K Canon w/ interchangeable lenses??? uses the EF series lenses you use on your still camera...

Rockit, you're thinkin of the XL1s, there's some great deals on ebay for a couple grand for those if you're looking for one.

I have always liked the XL1S. It is pretty slick. I am using the Canon Elura 40MC which is, by no means, a pro camera. It is light and easy to carry. One of these days i see an XL1S in my arsenal!!

Look for the video that Evan posted from the Boca meet. Most of the footage is from a similar (or same) camera mount. It did not seem to have any problem hanging on, but I would not want one on the track with me. I too would be surprised if a tech inspector would allow that.

for me it was between the XL1s and the GL2, I opted for the GL2 since it's smaller, and has a viewfinder, not to mention lighter in the wallet as well

I had a similar one that I sold, though my suction was rated to 125lbs. A friend of mine used his to take some pretty amazing footage.
