sway bar thickness
sway bar thickness
Anyone know the stock 996TT sway bar thickness for front and rear? I'm looking to upgrade bars and want to go larger. I was told that the GT3 bars will fit the rear but not the front because of the AWD system. GT3 bars are hollow, so lighter, but I would need a substitute for the front. Any suggestions and experience from my 6speed brothers?
GT3 are supposed to be the same thickness as stock but are officially for a narrow car, so they don't exactly fit....that is something to bring up with Fabryce at GMG.....or Dan at Vivid...., but lighter due to hollow nature. H&R's are thicker, but heavier.....
Oddly, my mechanic said the front was easy to put in (H&R), so I am always confused by the issue of the front. One thing, the stocks are not adjustable, the H&R's and the GT3's are. GMG too. Key is also the sway links...I put Agency Power links on my H&R sways....adjustable and way, way, way more stout. If I break one, I will have broken the car in half. I did run one DE with the stock links out of necessity (box broke in shipping and I did not get the AP links....Dan fedexed them overnight once he knew....long story). I did not break a link at Pocono with JIC Cross 8/12's at full stiff..and that is a rough track. But, others have broken sway links....see many a posting on that subject (BMWDEMON>>>).
Anyway, that is all I know. I have the H&R's now and they are superb. High quality. Nice materials in the connection hardware, etc. Dan was working on a mega sway bar. I love the look of the TRG bar, but my AP stuff was about 50% cost and I am much of what Tom suggested, about 60% into the capacity of the car.....but it sure is fun dreaming. :-)
One take home, and this is my opinion only, but if you upgrade, you should do the links too, preferably with strong ones (Agency Power, Tarrett, TRG, etc.). Best of luck.

If you have good coilovers and a GT3 sway and corner balance that is MORE than enough for ANY street driving and GOOD ENOUGH for 90% of those who take this car to a track.
more is not always better.
Just an FYI, some tuners dont like to put the GT3 sways on Turbo cars because they are made for a narrow body car and thus the geometry is a bit off. If you want GMG make a bar that is the "correct" size and is hollow.
the front is difficult to put on due to the AWD system and even I didnt do it till we pulled the front diff out.
