I have 2 JL 10" W6. (running at about 700watt)
they are extremely loud subs.
I like them. I dunno about the neighbours though...

I'm not looking for anything that will **** off the neighbors, but I would like a little more than what the stock Bose puts out. Would it make a difference if I replaced the Bose speakers with something else, maybe reusing the bose "enclosure"? Or do I basically need to rip that whole thing out and start fresh?

you need a new enclosure. About 60% of good sub performance comes from the enclosure. If you want a very high quality sub check out the following:

Image Dynamics IDMax
Audiomobile EVO-R
Adire Brahma
JL W7

those are my four favorite with the EVO-R probably the best small enclosure sub i have heard. The others need a bit more space but are at the top of the class

Any of the JL line of subs are good in my book. If you are just looking to fill in the lower end better than the Bose, perhaps consider two 8" subs. Much easier to package... just remove the Bose unit and a box can be fitted behind the rear seats. I had two JL 8w0's in such a box... sounded awesome.

you'll get much better sound from a single high quality 10 than two 8's. most high end subs do not come in an 8" version.

Also remember that you will need an amp that can sufficiently push the subs. All that i mentioned have fairly significant power needs.

I have the Image Dynamics subs in a pair of custom enclosures built by Rod at Car Audio Innovations, and they are fantastic. As Steve says, you are going to need a decent amp as well, however. And you will probably be so happy with the results that you will think about putting Focals in the doors and the dash. And you might as well replace the rears while you are at it. And then that head unit really will have to go...

In my ESV i have a JL 10w3 in a custom stealth enclosure. Its powered by a McInstosh 330 (think its called 330 or maybe 300).

Another consideration is what amp you are going to use. With highs and mids, you choice of amp is very important, albeit a little less so with subs, however you definately want a strong clean signal.

Depending on how much you want to spend, you might also consider checking out Focal. I believe they still make some of the best speakers in the business, although they are a bit pricey.

Interesting thread. Given the necessity of a properly engineered enclosure to get good bass, does anyone care to suggest a source for a subwoofer/enclosure/amp package accepting high level input to go into a 996 to replace the Bose system?

pre-made enclosures generally suck. go to a reputable high end installer and they will help you out.

Believe me, you can get great sound from 2 8" subs. Its all in how the box is made. However, go for whatever sounds best to your ears. Mine were mounted in an enclosure the same as what Car Audio Innovations offer. Take a look at their site for some pix...

I also have the Image Dynamics subs 8" in a custom enclosure built by Rod at Car Audio Innovations for the deck behing the rear seat.

it worked very well, much better than the bose setup. with 300 watts your hair will stand on edge with a good song. mine is in a black carpet enclosure looks like "sloths". only black. im selling it.

selling because i removed the rear seats and installed a T/E roll bar. so i want a more finished look were the seats were. so cartunes in farmingdale ny is building my new enclosure now. with 2 10" jl w6. the encloure is fiberglass molded to fit the seat wells and then plywood glassed over flat across the top edge.

if anyone wants my other sub box let me know...
