California Hands Free - Solutions

Well, July 1st marked California's handsfree laws. Since you NJ guys have had the handsfree laws for a while I thought I'd see what solutions work.

I'm currently using a plantronics bluetooth mounted to a ProClips mount for my Blackberry. The BB syncs withe the bluetooth as soon as I get in the car and then answering is as easy as taking the earpiece out of the charger.

It doesn't however cut out the stereo like some in dash handsfree units. I tried one unit from Fry's but it didn't work well because the porsche is too noisy and the noise cancellation system made me sound like I was in the men's room (so my callers said). The plantronics noise cancellation works much better.

What other solutions work?

Use the speakerphone or text message (You would think text messaging would be against the law but our great law makers think it's more dangerous to place the phone to your ears)

Speakerphone only works in stop and go traffic. My car has a modified exhaust and is too loud inside for the speaker phone to be effective.

As far as texting goes... maybe someone else can text and drive... but it's only a matter of time i would look up to a big surprise and expensive crunch.

I use a Parrot Kit that is integrated into my Kenwood Excelon DVD/NAV setup. I had my installer run a custom relay setup and integrate into the factory speakers (even with amps, etc...) so it shuts off the rest of the system temporarily when a call comes in or goes out. We originally installed it and used the speaker that it came with but my car was too loud and it was useless unless cruising at under 20mph or so... This will be the challenge with most modified turbos!

Now, it is super loud and works at fwy speeds. I couldn't be happier!

Call Dennis Barish at Dennis Barish Designs if you are interested: 818 399 7216

Tell him Kalon sent ya...

I don't use a bluetooth headset, but I can truthfully say I have never received a clear call from someone who was using one.

I use a plug in earpiece/mic that plugs into the phone- $10, no muss no fuss... this BT headset thing is BS propagated by the vendors!

The headset is another item to loose, another item to charge... how often do you MAKE calls or clear you voicemail WITHOUT having the phone out and in your hand? I don't.

I hate looking like a star wars wanna be with the headsets on....

Just me
