Oil Burning

Just brought my 2001 996 tt in for its 30,000 mile service. It is still buring a quart of oil every 600 miles....is this normal? Porsche claims it is, because I drive the car hard...I don't...please advise.

I believe a quart every 600 miles is within Porsche's specifications.

Sounds a little high to me unless you drive under extreme conditions. I recently bought a 03 911 cab and was also concerned with excess oil consumption. I posted about it here, but did not get much response. My use is more like a quart/200 miles. My dealer is talking about an engine replacement. They had to document the usage 3 times and he put in a request for an engine and now we wait and see. I'll post when I get an answer.

I burn oil at about 1qt. per 600 miles but I only have 6000 miles on my car. At 30,000 miles everything should be seated. Maybe someone else can chime in here but I believe burning oil at that rate with 30,000 mile is a problem. Historically Porsche motors burn alot of oil up to 8,000-10,000 miles when everything seats and then consumption drops dramatically.

1qt per 600 miles is normal since he is driving a TURBO (not a regular 911 Carrera). The turbochargers make the situation for both cars rather different.

Might also depend on your engine break-in program. I'm looking at about 1/4 quart every thousand or so miles. I was ultra-conservative in breaking in the engine. Also, I don't drive it THAT hard (use around 4K as the initial shift point and keep cruising revs at between 2K - 3K, street use only. I recall that 1 quart every 600 - 650 miles is at the high end of the tolerance level. I think it would be considered acceptable, not normal, meaning - you don't get a new engine :-).

I have 16,000 mile and about the same burn rate.

I like to know whether the modded TT's (stage1-4) have a different oil burn rate.
Also, what's the burn rate on GT2 and GT3?

We're keeping Mobil in business.

this may seem like an idiotic question? What does it mean when the rings don't seat and what does it mean for engine life/addtional problems?

Since new, I have not needed to add one drop of oil to my GT3 in 5000 miles and two track days. The burn rate should roughly be the same on a GT2 as it is on a TT.

I've been watching this thread. Coming from japanese cars I find it unusual that these cars are designed to burn oil and that different cars in the same group burn different amounts. Here I'm burning so much I may need a new engine and someone else I know with the same car runs 6000 miles and burns no oil. What gives or does this just go into the "oh well" catagory?

About the same rate here. Bought it with 15,900 miles. Currently have 16,700 and have added one quart.
