Just had a motion detector go off at my office so met the cops there and turned out to be a false alarm.
However, while two officers were sweeping the building, the third stood outside with me and had a look over the car. He asked me how fast I had driven it.
I wasn't sure that telling him 174 mph was the smartest answer so I said "come on officer, what do you expect me to say here?", to which his response was "If I had this, I'd be speeding in it."
I'd be interested in knowing what others would have told him. We ended-up getting close to the truth and he didn't seem too phased by it - just a casual "you probably don't want to do that too much" comment.

I was in a similar situation in a gas station with an officer and when he asked me I told him I do the speed limit and his answer was if I tryed to catch you the wheels would fall off of the patrol car.

Honesty with a dose of modesty. I'd have told him, but not in a braggard way. Cops are humans too and most of them are pretty cool guys. Many do the same things in their own cars when the uniform is off and enjoy talking about it with other car guys. But they have a job to do and have no problem giving you the ticket the day you're staring down the sights of their radar gun.
i got pulled over once in my old car for speeding ... the cop then saw my stereo setup which had a navigation screen (very uncommon in 1999) he said it was nice then asked me what kind of speakers i had ... he seemed like an enthusiast ... then after i told him that i had 5 10" woofers in my car and what kind of speakers i had he got out of the car and told his partner to write me up for HAVING MY STEREO TOO LOUD ... he also wrote down all the components of my stereo ... just make sure the cop isnt getting info from you to screw you over ... its better to be safe than sorry ... next time ill keep my mouth shut no matter how nice i think the cop is
On June 12, a police officer posed the identical question to me. I balked and attempted to avoid answering, but he assured me that there would be no adverse consequences. I answered "170" and explained the circumstances (3:00 am on the 101 out by Thousand Oaks). He was cool about it.
