Want a better Nav System

Please help in choosing the best possible Nav-DVD unit for an '01 with factory nav. Fitment is very important to me. It's gotta look as "factory" as possible. If you have pictures, I would really appreciate looking at them.

Pioneer Avic-Z2 seems to be a good choice - it's what i almost went with before i traded in my 996TT X50 - HDD navi, and if you choose the move the a/c controls down like the 996TT's have with factory navi - it looks great!

Here is my eclipse unit. Only thing you need is to get someone to create a trim plate for it. Functionality of navi is IMO excellent + SQ is amazing.
I like the eclipse for the 4v preout signal + a few other SQ features it offers.
Most people use kenwood and Pioneer. If you do a search their are a couple detailed posts with kenwood navigations installed on 996's.

The one disadvantage of the eclipse would be the install. As you can see in my 2 pics the trim plate and headunit are not super flush. Later i redid it and got a perfect fit. Now i have an even better trim plate. Black vinyl wrapped around some very light wood like material. overall look is great.

I've been thinking about putting a Pioneer AVIC-F90BT in my 996, it's the least aftermarket looking IMO and it has an actual volume ****. I hate buttons.

Has anyone used the trip plates that are on sale on ebay? They are made for the double din.

Any display can be mounted to look 'factory'.... I personally think the decision on a Nav must be made on human interface AND MAP DATA.

Most people here have one unit, and they like it. Impossible to get A versus B versus C opinions, based on experience. Spend some time researching on caraudio.com, other forums with folks in the business.

Personally I like Navteq maps, and was looking at the Alpine DVD based system- you will be able to get updated maps in the future. Other systems may not have regular updates and/or use lower quality map databases. NVE 872A, IVA W505.

I've not seen that installed here, btw.

I am currently in the hunt for the same thing, though primarily for sound and iPod integration. I am looking at three pioneer units: avic-D3, avic-Z3, and avid-F900bt. You can pick up the D3's now for about $800. I have spent a fair amount of time on avic411.com learning about these devices. I am currently leaning toward the 900. All of these support DVD playback as well as rear cameras and bluetooth, though the bluetooth performance seems pretty lousy. I am currently considering pairing this with a Reus installation.

Sorry, it's not a 996, but you get the idea.

I have a Pioneer AVIC D2 with Sirius and camera currently installed. It's a good unit, sounds great but I dont like the functionality, just not very intuitive to me. I like the functionality / Intuitiveness of my Toyota/Lexus nav much better, which happens to be made by Fujitsu / Eclipse. I bought a newer Eclipse model off ebay recently, should be installed in a couple weeks.

I would shop arond and look for the functioanlity you like. I almost bought an earlier model eclipse but doing some research found it didnt have pre outs...that would have sucked. Find one you like and can navigate around easily- nothing like driving and catn figure out what youre trying to do....on a related note, many of the pioneer units have a performance screen that has options such has acceleration and lateral G's etc...

Hope this helps and good luck.
