Thinking about getting an older sportscar ...

Over the past few months I've been thinking about getting a 70s 911 or something like a 308 GTS in addition to the Turbo. Over the past few years, I've grown to appreciate the simplicity of some of the older cars and regardless of how much manufacturers harken to the past with styling cues e.g with round headlights in the 997, the total package will never quite have the feeling of the real deal - understandably so, since it's not really meant to.

Does anyone here have an older car like this in addition to your Turbo? My concern is that I might end might a maintenance nightmare, which would rule it out for me at the current time.

We had an 911 SC, was great fun. We had some work done, and maybe wasn't as quick as the new cars, but was a lot of fun and pretty reliable.

Go for an older P car... They really are bullittproof cars that you can drive the snot out of,, I just sold my 87 930 and am buying a 91 964 turbo, just because I miss the fun factor of driving the older cars,, AS much as I love my tt. I miss the feeling, the smell,, the sounds, of the old turbo cars.
At first you feel as though youare driving a truck, but get used to them, give them some respect, and learn them,, and they will thrill,, just as the tt does!
These older cars are a blast to drive,, The fun factor starts at a much lower speed, and they are very engaging to drive. You can get into a really nice rythem driving them, and when you get used to what they can and cannot do,, it is a very satisfying drive. More rawand roudy . You are really a part of the car while driving the older air cooled cars, you pay attention more,, You stay more focused, and the old cars just talk to you.. Plus they look and sound cool !!!
My 87 turbo ran like a top and really did not require any more dollars to maintain than the tt.. Actually less,, tires are cheaper,,
Another fun thing, is that when you take an old Porsche out for a drive,, people want to talk to you,, talk about the car,,and talk about their old Porsche,, I actually had a sherriff pull me over ,, just to talk cars,, he was curious about the car, and we had a great chat,, right there on the side of the road... Here is a pic of the 964 turbo that I just purchased,, it is not home yet,, but will be soon.
Another plus to the older cars,, If you buy a good one,, you can usually drive it and enjoy it for a year or 2, and then get your money back out of them.
Good luck.

If you are concerned with maintenance stay away from a 308. It will cost you an arm and a leg to get fixed. I love the way they look, but Ferraris are way expensive. Check out Ferrarichat.com to get a real picture. Wross probably had a bad SC. I had a 78 SC and other than the mods I had no problems with it. Get an 84 and up carrera . They are pretty much bulletproof as they have the new chain tensioners and the motronic ignition as well as the new fuel injection.

The pre-impact bumper 2.4 litre cars are fun and collectable. I had a '72 911T with the mechanical fuel injection and loved it. They are certainly not as fast as todays cars, but a great step back in time. With the heater box type heating system, you have to drive them hard, first thing in the morning to defrost the windshield in the fall/winter - just a lot of fun! And in the winter, you have to drive them hard in a snow storm to keep the windshield from icing up! Things have come a long way.

I had a 86, 930. It was fun but it's a lot different from our 996tts. As mentioned already the heater is pretty marginal and forget about using the a/c in the summer. I had a K27 turbo, headers, SC cams and a Koklen intercooler on that car. It was a beautiful, quick and relatively touble free car.

I'd talk to your local indy or whomever you'd be using to support repairs/maintenance and ask them what they would recommend. When I was recently at the INDY I used for the clutch bleed/ alignment, we were discussing race cars I'm thinking about and he Poopooed a number of cars I'd have thought would be "fun" and "cheap" to run...
