How much to rebuild a 996 TT engine?
Unless you have the in-house capability to rebuild engines, or at least swap them (including software re-loads), it's rarely a money-maker. Cars are always worth more in parts, and you're considering going the other way (building a car from several parts). You'll have to get great deals on all the parts, not just the car.
My engine is being rebuilt as we speak by the dealer....
total was 18k (6 in labor and 12 in parts). They changed "everything" that touches oil (camshafts, pistons, etc).
All is being done by dealer since car was under CPO. The issue was high oil consumption (1qt / 400 miles) and after months of testing PCNA finally agreed to do the work. I hope it starts once they put it together!

This really needs a stand alone thread... tell us more on the process. Kinda surprised they didn't sway if for a rebuilt.

I know I owe you the full story with pics and everything. The short version of it is that PCNA approved the engine teardown after conclusive oil consumption test. They really didnt find anything specifically wrong so they just decided to replace all parts with new parts. The dealer suggested a new engine but cost was $25k for new engine vs. 18k for rebuild so porsche approved the latter. It takes about 3 days to teardown and 3 days to rebuild so figure ~30hrs each at ~100 per hour and that's how you get to 6k in labor. As soon as I get it back hopefully next monday, I will post full story. I am very glad that they came through and have a lot of respect for PCNA since I dont imagine every car company would do this kind of repair for an oil consumption issue.
I clearly would have loved to get a new engine but that was outside of what I could achieve. Porsche CPO warranty clearly indicates that they will "repair or replace the part with new or remanufactured parts." In other words I can force them to fix it but cant force them to do it the way I want. It was a big battle to get them to agree to the rebuild. The rebuild includes: pistons, camshafts, liners, cylinder heads but not rods or crankshaft. With the delta being $0 for rebuild and at least $7k-10K for new engine (service manager said 25 one day, 28 the other so maybe 25 is cost, 28 msrp), I opted (right or wrong) for the $0 option. My CPO warranty expires in 3 months but they are giving me 24 months on the rebuild.
so does Porsche in Atlanta...I just cant tell PCNA how to run their business as long as they fulfill the warranty. To use a more simple example, if your AC stopped working and PCNA repaired it with a $10 part and 1 hour in labor, is that OK or should you try to force them to put a brand new AC unit? I guess a new AC unit may last you 5 years while the fix may last 1 year but if they fixed it, they completed their part of the contract. Of course, I need to confirm they did fix it!
I've been shopping as you may have read my post "Catastrophic Engine Failure" and I've found prices for labor at 4K locally, 5.5K at 911 Design, 8K w/Kevin at UMW. So price is really is everywhere on labor. I've been told a good rebuild is 14K - 15K if it's rebuildable - GL w/your endeavor

Here is an 02 TT engine for just $17k
