How much to rebuild a 996 TT engine?

Hi Guys.....
Someone is selling 2004 TT 996 with an engine that is "Not repairable". Millage 17000 only.
Is this possible?
would it cost alot to rebuild the engine?
Is this deal worth it if the rest of the car is sold for -say- 25 000 $?

Your insight would be helpfull...

Sure, a couple of rods throught the block should do it. it usually smacks the crap out of the heads as well. But for enough $$$ anything is "repairable"

if the car is perfect in every other way, i'd try to buy it for < 20K, IMHO

i believe you could get a nice used motor for in the 20K range ????

I want to look into all these issues (new vs old engine, labor cost, time spent before ready, dealer vs outside shop.. etc) before going to the guy with an offer.

thanx for all of you who contributed thus far.

If you are going to bother, get a "built" engine...call Kevin at UMW or Stephen at IA about a crate and what would they do. Do you need a harness, etc....etc. And, if an engine was blown, what other abuse has the car suffered....

Umm, yeah, even if you got the car for say...$20k and a motor for $20k, for 45k-50k you buy a pretty nice car and have NO parts, labor (grief!!) to put it together and drive it the day you buy it...and not have to worry what else might be wrong with it. just my .02...

What guarantee that the transmission is perfect?

You could drop 25k on a motor only to find tranny issues....

You would take a lot of risk not knowing if it's just the engine because there could be a lot more wrong with it. Sure sounds like a money-pit. I would walk away.
