Ignition on the left?

Anyone know why the ignition is on the left? I was just told and wanted to confirm the story. Sorry if this is old news but I am new to ownership.

It is for the old starts at Le Mans where the driver would run across the track and jump into the car. It is on the left so with his left hand he could start the car and with the right grab the gear lever.

JayM is infamous around these parts
Tradition? The Porsches built back when Le Mans actually started the races that way had the ignition on the right. Starting a 550 is a 4-step process consisting of turning the key (to the right of the steering wheel), then flipping the two magneto switches, then pushing the start button. Guess it is one of the current Porsche management's "marketing traditions".

i have noticed it is very handy at the track. You can let the car run for a while after lapping to cool down. Then you can easily reach in the window to turn it off.

It does take some getting used to though. I have jammed the right side of the steering column with the key about 1000 times.
