Not sure if anyone cares anymore, but I was considering this as a DIY when the weather got nicer. There's a guy who did a write-up for this procedure on his 350z. Aside from the install/removal instructions, it seems like this would be the correct way to go about it. Here's the write-up

smoked tail lights
I had my body shop paint my tail lights and the brake light. Turned out great, can be easily taken off and is very cheap to have done.
