Question title transfer

Hello all,

I am very close to purchase the 996turbo from a dealership. However, in order to save sale tax, he says its title would transfer directly from the previous owner to my name as a buyer. Just act like he is a broker on this deal (although, told me that he has already bought this car. Somehow, the previous owner left the back of this title empty for him (the dealership).

I would like to ask that is it safe to buy this way? (of course the previous owner must sign as a seller for title transferring).

Thank you

P.S. Its title is in New York and transfer to GA.

As long as he brings you in contact with the original owner, you should be OK.
Ask to see a copy of the title and start doing your checks.
I would peronally jump all over this since, if it turns out to be ligit, you can avoid up to 7% GA sales tax that way.
Which county are you in ?

Good luck with the purchase. Let me know when you're ready to go cruising the mountains

Make sure it is not back dated too far as most states have a penalty for not transfering the title right away.

How does that work??? He is in GA and buys it, brings it to GA, pays tax when he titles the car.

Only way to avoid tax is if HE had titled it in NY. But for HIM to title it in NY, NY will want tax.

I don't know how the dealer is thinking THIS buyer will save tax.

Is this a dealerSHIP, or a used car lot? Car dealers are tax exempt anyway, so I am wondering why there is something unusual about this deal. Dealer buys car, doesn't pay tax, sells car, transfers title.

What you get alot of is 'dealers' which are guys with car dealer's licenses, buy cars and drive them for a few months to a year as their personal car, then sell them...they avoid titling and taxes. Pretty common...it's why you see alot of funny stuff on carfax, and carfax can miss 'owners'

When did he buy it from the NY guy? What does the NY guy say?

Much appreciate for your input!

1. Should I contact the previous owner by phone, email or seeing him in person with his id to assure that was the one?

2. Yes, the dealership has provided me a copy of its title, and how do I check this? I also have its carfax.

Thank you

By the way, I live in Sugarloaf area, which belongs to Gwinnett county, and sale is 6%. For that cruising mountain, you may disappoint because.....

Adam,

In GA, there is no sale tax on used cars if buying from individual, which means the title must be in individual name.

About the sale tax saving, I was the one asked him to do it. He did not know that at first. Although, he is willing to accommodate.

I'm not sure how it works but it seems like you are about to get your TT that you have been searching for so long. Congrats!

Huh...interesting. Betcha the car dealers would like that one changed! (In many states they don't charge "sales" tax, but rather "use" tax- which means they can charge everyone when the car arrives in the state, not just retail & private sales in the state.

I don't know if I've ever seen a dealer actually title the car in their name... The dealer's license allows them to not title the car and retain it. Every time I've bought a used car from a dealer, it was still titled in the last owner's name. (Otherwise there'd be a carfax listing for each whole owner, right?)

If Georgia wants a bill of sale, you'll need to get a bill of sale from the NY owner to you.

Re: contacting the prior owner- I always recommend a direct conversation with people- email is so hard to judge, and misinterpret.

Yes Adam, was already told him that I do need the bill of sale from the previous owner for GA's title registration. He says ok once has received my money.
My main concern is if I don't see the signature along with his ID in person, then could that be trust? or the seller may turn around to say...hey, this is my car not the dealer's car...you should pay me instead of him...

Thanks a lot for your input!

1. I expect the dealer has a canceled check, and other documents that show he bought the car. So the old owner couldn't come forward and reclaim the car.

2. Worse case it blows up and you pay tax. (Maybe worser case is ...well..lets not go there.)

3. Personally I don't trust the dealer to falsify a bill of sale from the old owner...(don't ask, don't tell)... or to tell you a week later "Sorry, I couldn't get it" after he has your money.

4. I'd want to talk to the prior owner and get any history.

5. You ARE getting a PPI, correct?

Adam,

Yes I plan to have PPI done. However may not on this car from New York.

M32,

One of the shop (not Porsche, for that much I would rather go to Porsche dealer !!!) is trying to charge me 3 times more than what you paid on your PPI.
I may have to stop looking to buy car from New York !

No luck with New Yorker !

The only suggestion that I have is.... if it doesn't "feel" right... Don't do it. I'm glad I followed my gut feel on the other two Pcars I looked at.

Also by doing that you are releasing the dealership from all the liabilities come with that transaction. If something were to go wrong with this car later like flood damage that has not been reported yet, break problems, frame damage, good will buy back etc. you have no place to go, you could never take them to court. Good luck with your purchase!
