Wheels & Tires for Winter... help!

Hey guys, winter is approaching up here in Canada (As I look outside and see nothing but white, I realize I maybe a bit behind...) and having just purchased a 996 Turbo from Texas, I 'm thinking I need to switch the tires off it

I've read the Tirerack thread about winter's wheel/tire sets, and thought I'd go down to my local tire shop and get their opinion. They asked me a bunch of questions that I didn't have the answer to, and I'm hoping someone here can help me out.

Is it possible to put 17" wheels on the car?

What is the smallest tire width I can get away with on the rears? (Stock rear's are 295?) Tirerack recommends 265, I'm just wondering if I can go even a bit smaller?

Do our tires have pressure sensors in them?

Thanks for any assistance you can provide! I really know nothing about wheels and tires, so feel to treat me like a newbie!

Where are you located, I have a set of 18" Winter tires I will not be using. They are Goodyear GW3 and a incredible winter tire and not too bad for the nice days in winter. That is the correct size for our car.YOU NEED TIRES FOR THIS CAR. It doesn't matter who you buy them off you just simply need them.I have have never ran any of my TT's in the snow, but my dedicated snow car..a 2004 C wears them all year long!cuz it only sees snow
Go a 18" x 265
No Pressure monitors in the car..unless the PO installed them

I'm over in Calgary, Alberta. We certainly don't get extreme snow over here, but I definitely need to change the tires over, and most likely the wheels as well (Since the rear is so wide).

I had originally set my hopes on a set of Nokian tires, as they most people agree they're the best in the winter. However, the largest tire they make for the back wheels is '255/45R18 103R XL'. Would this tire fit on a 10" rim?

For those who drive their P-cars in the winter, do you get oil treatments to protect from rust?
I was told, german cars are pretty well rustproofed from the factory, so no need.
