Advice on Dealing with Porsche
There is P-car content here, but it is more of a general nature, not 996TT specific. Since I've mostly posted here in the past, I figured you guys might have some good ideas for me.
I picked up my Cayenne Turbo this week. What an awesome vehicle. The only problem is that later I noticed an odd paint blemish where the base coat is apparently flawed in an area about the size of a "dollar" pancake. You can only see it in certain light and when looking at the corner panel from the rear.
The dealer has offered to do a repaint. But, they figure it will require blending into the rear door, down to the bumper cover and up to the roof. Possibly even into the front door. It's the problem with metallic paint... (Titanium Metallic - looks gorgeous...)
I don't have a problem with say redo'ing a small spot in the base coat and then redoing the clear in the general area of this one panel. But, the idea of repainting the entire area they specified does not sit well with me.
Honestly, my preferred solution is to be given a retroactive price break on the car - as a sale of a car with a slight defect - and leave it at that. I doubt anyone but me will know it is there and if they do, who cares.
The service manager is going to present the situation to Porsche with the idea of a price adjustment.
What I would like to know is what is reasonable to expect? Has anyone worked with Porsche on this sort of thing before? My feeling is that a reasonable price concession would be roughly equal to what the cost of repair would be.

A friend of mine had the same paint problem on the hood of her brand new Audi.
Audi offered to repaint. Sounded good to her since there was no blending involved. I told her to demand a new car. She got a new car within a week. This was at Sonnen Audi in San Rafael. They also sell Porsche in Mill Valley.

A guy here had a paint problem with his new TT as delivered and after looking at it, Porsche decided to get him a new car. He was able to use the other one until the new one showed up. Hold your ground if this is what you want. If you bought it, don't have a repaint as this results in diminished value. If it's a lease and they will give you $ off, then that's OK. Let us know.

So, what is the best approach? Polite but firm and persistent? (like most things)
Or irate buyer of very expensive item? I don't do this one as well, but I suppose I could turn that on if needed.

I had my new 996T replaced when it was determined that what were thought to be wet sandable spots in the clear coat turned out to require a repaint over a large portion of the car. Ask for a replacement vehicle.

I find paint blemishe's are more and more common out of the factory these days. Hell 90% of cars come w/ HORRENDOUS orange peel out of the factory now. These include everything from p-cars (although in genral Porsche does a GREAT job), to MBZ's, BMW's, etc. The only real good paint I've seen is ferrari and lambo and I bet not all of those is perfect.
I'm about to buy a new car and have been looking at the Dodge Magnum, but everyone I've seen has pretty bad orange peel (atleast bad in my eyes, the dealers don't even notice it). I'm definately gonna shop around and find the perfect car even if it means custom ordering it and finding a way to slip in some extra cash to INSURE that it comes back orange peel free.
I'd either ask for a new car or have them repaint it the way they described it. This is the best method as it'll insure proper blending. My girlfriend had a small scratch on her rear quarter panel, they practically repainted the whole side of the car and half of the roof and it was Silver

I wish you were a little farther south. I'm moving to Carlsbad in Jan/Feb. I have a mobile detailer now and have gotten spoiled.
Do you have guys down in the No. County part of San Diego? Or Orange County only?

The afternoon that I picked up my 03 TT, I noticed 2 small chips on one door - evidently anothor car door hit mine when it was parked at the Dealer. He offered to repaint have the door repainted at his painter. It bothered me but since I already picked up the car I figured I had no choice.
Actually the door looks fine after the repaint and I can't see any difference after 1+ years. I was annoyed at first but it is now forgotten.

Same exact issue here on a brand new black 04 Range Rover. Dealer offered to have door repainted. i said that was not an acceptable solution. So I either waited for a new one to arrive with the same interior color, we settle on having them take the door off another Black one they had and swap the interior panels on the door. We agreed to do the latter.

As long as the work is done by a quality shop there shouldn't be any hesitation.
I may have a good guy for you down there. Let me see if I can find his contact.
I have an 02 cab that has developed some sort of solvent pop in the clear. looks like hell on the horiz. surfaces. porsche agreed to paint the whole car except for the doors. rather than cheap out, i ponied up for the doors and i'm getting the whole car done. i would have expected better paint from such an expensive car, but at least they're taking care of it.
