Don’t leave home without knowing your air/fuel mixture

Speed Gallery installed an AEM wideband air/fuel gauge in my car today . . . . very clean install, right next to my SmarTire in the center console. The AEM gauge looks and works great . . . . both analog and digital displays. I’ll try to post some pics shortly.

Low and behold, I discovered that I am now running a tad lean under full boost . . . . +/- 11.8. My current program was created with the stock intake. Apparently my new intake (installed last week) is doing its job and I’m getting more air to the turbos and engine. Now we have to have GIAC write a new program to accommodate the additional air and I have to temporarily stay off the boost. Ohhhh, the pain of not boosting . . .

Tad Lean??? What do you want to be running? What were you running before? 11.8 at WOT is nothing to be worried about.

11.8 is actually a little on the richer side. Very safe and what we like to see. Now 13.8 and you have an issue. Keep in mind the higher the number the leaner, the lower the number the richer.

Hmmmmm . . . . thanks for the info guys. I guess I'm ok after all.

Should I be watching any readings other than WOT? Meaning, should I be concerned with 14s when not boosting, or 13s with less than WOT?

What is the ideal mixture, and what is the window of good mixtures?

Thanks again,

Craig

Cruise is not critical. No boost no worries. If you look at the original maps 14 when cruising is fine. Your CR is lower (no boost) it is when combustion temps rise along with the CR you need to be really concerned. 11.8 is fine and I would say stay with that.

Thanks Stephen. Pardon my ignorance, but what is "CR"?

Thanks Tim.

This new gauge is addictive . . . . I couldn't take my eyes off of it while driving to the office this morning. Mostly high 14s and some low 15s with no boost. I did one WOT burst and the ratio dropped to the low-mid 12s. Very cool gizmo.

Thats the same wideband unit I am gonna get. 11.8 is nice under WOT on a boosted car. anything leaner than 12.2 is going on the lean side. I perfer to keep my car between 11.5 and 11.9 @ WOT...so it lasts.

Just out of curiosity how much did you pay for the part and how much did you pay for the install? PM me if you don't wanna say here.

I don't know . . . I haven't paid yet. I think the unit was in the neighborhood of $500. Install took a long time. Most shops charge approx 6 hours for install. Call Dan at Speed Gallery: (818) 766-2321 . . . he has already installed two of them and he has another unit in stock.
