Does 600 hp upgrade cause long term reliability issues?

My car has been "modified" with K16/24 turbos since 2002. The car has a number of dyno sheets showing progression of around 500WHP since that time, which puts the car somewhere around 600BHP. The car is fine, runs well, uses NO oil, and has exhibited ZERO issues with performance. It's also been upgraded to higher power levels since the winter of 2007 and the only downside has been killing the OEM clutch.

The car has 21K miles on it, and most of those miles have been in the current turbo configuration. I've got 28 road course days, along with another day of drag racing (maybe 7-8 passes) without any issues at all.

My car gets driven AT the limits, Period. And this car gets driven in Washgton DC Rush hour traffic on a regular basis & I drive it weekly.

As many others here, I am way over the 600bhp level with 53xxx miles and drive my car as hard, if not harder than anyone. The only issues I have had are the clutch slave and accumulator, both of which are common on these cars, yet not performance related...Based on what I am seeing guys here do, I'm starting to think 700bhp is a very reasonable level for stock motors.

GBG,

I know that you are currently doing your research and I applaud you for that. It is very important to seek information from the owner's who are driving these 600 hp kits on a daily/weekly basis. I am not sure if you have considered the FVD Level 4 kit but you may want to give us a call directly to discuss what we can offer you. Our tuning philosophy is reliability followed by driveability and our 575 kit (we tend to state the number's of our kit's more conservatively than most) may be just the kit that you are looking for. I am currently working at FVD Germany at the moment so you might want to give us a call as you can discuss your options directly with our design team.

Here are a few links that may be helpful...

I would recommend the intercooler's and the clutch highly although to my amazement a new 6 speed member just purchased one of our level 4's that has beening running our kit since 2003 and still has the stock clutch!! (verified by the prior owner)

Thanks in advance for your time,
Rhonda

If you would like just pm or email me or call the florida office at 800 274 2220 and they will forward the call to me here in Germany.

Staff@RPM is infamous around these parts
Steve is definitely a testament to how hard these cars can be driven. I don't know of any other Porsche owner that puts one of these cars through the tests that Steve does on the street. He is proud of his car, its capabilities and understands just how hard he is on parts. If there was a minor flaw in any of Steve's components, from the hard parts to the tuning, it would have led to devastation of Steve's engine a long time ago.

As Steve said, every tuner has a 600 kit, make sure you get the parts that are going to be a platform to reach your final goal you don't want to repurchase parts to step up to the next level if you don't have to. Spend the time and money on the small components that are an important part of the package but are often overlooked. Every tuner can supply you the same turbos, wastegates, exhaust, etc., it's the small details that sometimes make the big difference.

Good luck with your car and have fun.

Been awhile since I poked around here. Saw this thread and decided to drop in. Though I haven't pushed my Stage IV nearly as hard as many of you, the car is rock solid. Had it into my mechanic today for basic fluid changes and a new set of tires. We just talked, and he said the mechanicals are perfect. Absolutely no issues. It will get its first track outing next month.

I've only had my K24/18gs for a little over 5000 miles. I love it by the way. I believe that these cars are overbuilt especially the engine. IMO, get a good tune, run good gas, don't go crazy with the boost and check your AFRs occasionally and I think you'll be fine.
