996 tt vs GT3 as de car
I instruct for DE's in my '01 996 TT. Last year, a friend let me drive his GT3 on track. Hate to say it, but hands down, the GT3 is a lot more fun to drive. My first and only session in his car, I was 1 sec slower than in my TT, and I was taking it very easy. The GT3 is so easy to drift through the corners, you have to drive it very differently from our cars.
If I had it to do over (and another $20k at the time) I'd go for the GT3.

ok Al I may have over Spoke!!!! it was St. Paddys and all! i could do alot with 20 K to a car,
heck my 996 gt3 has the club sports and just slick, probably 6K???/ i dont know... and it is a heck of a car,
I know i spent a lot of cash on my 996 GT2 to dial it in!
but think of the cost of both vehicles today.. same range .. and no peske AWD and computers on the Gt3, but turbo is fun car all around
i bet you can spend 20 K on the TT and i will go by you in a GT3...
not bein a sob but a Gt3 is hands down better track car...
If you're speaking of a bone stock GT3 (not one like yours with Motons and slicks) and making the assumption that the drivers in both cars were of equal talent and equally experienced in each car, I believe 20K on a bone stock 996tt could go a long way towards making a very quick track car. Removing a good bit of weight from the TT can be free if a person has a modicum of wrenching ability. A little bit of external engine work and the rest on suspension and tires would make a formidable package.
I still agree the GT3 is hands down a better track car. Ther are cerrtain things about the 996tt that can't be changed (such as suspension pick up points) without spending a ton.
