996 tt vs GT3 as de car
996 tt vs GT3 as de car
I have a 996tt that performs well at the track but recently found a good deal on a GT3. Any opinions as to which would be the better street/ de car; is the handling on a gt3 that much better to make up for hp and torque defecit? Is it any more reliable after de use?
The GT3 is better stock. Period.
The TT will take some brake mods, but can be equally as reliable and has much more potential with modifications. However will never be as rewarding to drive as the GT3.
TT is safer though, not sure if you meant 997 or 996 GT3 but I'm assuming 996. which has no traction control, so you'd better be experienced before you mess with it.
Put some coilovers, and rear sway on your car and amp up the brake system and it's already faster than the 996 GT3.
And finally, the TT, for most, is much more fitting on the street. Me personally, I like the race like ride on the street too, but maybe not for a DD.
IMO keep your TT, not worth switching cars to be honest, not in this market.

Dez pretty much nailed it. If you just want to drive it and focus on becoming a better driver, I think it's the best option, and if I had it to do over again, I'd probably have gone that route.

the answer to what is the best street/DE car it is the TT hands down.
if you are doing less than 6 DE's a year stay with the TT.
If you are a track junkie jump ship to the GT3.
I went through the same decision process. I decided against the 996 GT3 because of its lack of torque and hp. a TT in the back straights will blow by a GT3. however will not be able to keep with the GT3 in the turns.
also other than trying to turn your GT3 into a Cup car there is very little modability room.

Keep the TT and get a low cost, low hp track car to really learn how to get the most out of a car. It's not as much fun at first but strip it, redo the suspension and after a year you'll be killing the higher hp cars in the corners and they'll have to give you the pass on the straights.

This is key. I've owned both cars, a TT with 500 bhp, brembo GT's, e88's, moton's, the whole 9. On the street and track the GT3 is definitely more rewarding. If you're more intrested in low lap times not much can touch a modded TT.

Thanks for the input guys. My curent track car is a modded 951, I just came across a really good deal (actually 2). A 996 gt3 with pccb and 43k for 47 and a 996 tt stock 6speed for 35.. yes 35, makes me sad to see these cars so cheap. I considered briefly a mas grand sport, their resale is even worse. I'm selling my brief excursion into z06 land on ebay and looking hard at the gt3.
GT3... Sorry, focus on being a BETTER driver, and less on the car... You'll be a better driver in the long run (unless you have buckets and buckets of money to do a full 996TT Track car mod)!

I agree, if you're fast in a GT3 it's because your butt can drive. You can throw a bunch of HP at a TT and go fast by default.
I may get a GT3 to club race, either that or an NA 996 next year. That's if my car hasn't become a reiteration of Tom's by then.
Oh BTW, scrap the PCCB idea, don't let that weigh in our decision. That's gotta be Gen I PCCB and those haven't gotten good reviews by anyone really. Like we said before, for the street and track, the TT is the better choice. But if you think you may graduate into a track junkie, your driving skills will thank you for the GT3.

Which is about as fast as you can go in a stock street GT3, from what I've been told... And I'd expect nothing less of you, Matt!
2:03s at VIR full in that car is simply amazing... And ALL driver!

If you're speaking of a bone stock GT3 (not one like yours with Motons and slicks) and making the assumption that the drivers in both cars were of equal talent and equally experienced in each car, I believe 20K on a bone stock 996tt could go a long way towards making a very quick track car. Removing a good bit of weight from the TT can be free if a person has a modicum of wrenching ability. A little bit of external engine work and the rest on suspension and tires would make a formidable package.
I still agree the GT3 is hands down a better track car. There are cerrtain things about the 996tt that can't be changed (such as suspension pick up points) without spending a ton.
