996 Jacking Points Question

I understand about the 4 points by the wheels, this question is not about them.

I want to know if it is safe to put a piece of wood or a material softer than metal, and jack the rear of the car up by the cross brace between the engine and Gearbox just in front of the rear wheels? This will raise the whole of the rear of the car up so one can install axle stands on the 2 rear wheels.

While I am at it, is there a similar point to do the same to the front?

Thanks,

SWR

No not the cross member. put the wood on the centerline of the engine case, where the oil drain plug is. Lift slowly and put the jack stands on the rear jack points car will be very secure.

If jackstands take to long to setup you can always get these...

I use them all the time!

I actually did exactly what you were talking about this past week. That crossmember is very beefy and allows you to lift the car up so much higher as you don't have to worry about the engine mounts compressing and losing some of your lift. I was able to get my jackstands on their 4th stop with plenty more height to go, while using the engine i was only able to get it on the 2nd stop.

It sure worked for me and I watched it as it was lifted and used wood to spread out the load. Just because it worked for me doesn't mean it was right, but I had no problems at all.

also, use jackstand that have min height of 10ish". i have jackstands that 12" min height. it lifts the front too high and the rear would be sitting too low. i could not get the jack to slide in the rear.
