Castrol 5w-40 instead of Mobil 0w-40???

M1 5W50 is on the Porsche approved list. It's actually factory fill on the 997GT2RS. There is a visible difference in idle oil pressure between 0w40 and 5w50 when hot at the track. Been there, done that...

Yes, no problems with mixing todays synthetics with even different viscosities

^ you might even want to consider the next change swapping to a fresh fill of mobil 5/50. i'm convinced the car likes it infinitely more than 0/40. that stuff ( 0/40 ) is SO thin in very high ambient heat, i can FEEL it shearing

112,000 moded miles been running Rotela T6 since 32,000 miles. No rattles, I use right at 1/2 liter in 5,000 miles. I will never switch. I run it in my V10 Touareg, my CTS-V, 944 Turbo, F250 Turbo Diesel and all my bikes. No brainier.

In street cars its all about flow at startup. Thats where the wear happens.
Especially turbocharged cars.
0W-anything is actually TOO THICK at startup temperature.
Why one would go to 5w or 10W or for Gawds sake 20W+ is going backwards.

i dont know much about cold weather temps relative to using a "5" on the lower end of oil types. but i can say with a fair amount of unscientific anecdotal certainty, that a 5/40 or even a 5/50 quiets down considerably, not only the *normal* chain rattle, but also a terrible "screech" at startup ( pre-pressure ) that my car exhibits.
i no longer use, and will never again use 0/40 for anything other than a necessary topoff, and only if i don't have any 5/50. though to vagscums point, i might use 0/40 if i kept my turbo outside parked next to the snowmobiles and the mush dogs lol

Have to mention that for operation in cold climes, with temps in the -25C range, Porsche recommends 0w-40 oil.
Frankly I'd switch to 0w-40 even before it got that cold. Back in Dec. 2014/Jan 2015 I was in the midwest with my Turbo and with 5w-50 oil in it (not a typo for 15w-50!) and when ambient temperatures down in the single digits I was a bit fearful that the 5w-50 oil might be too "thick".
But the engine cranked and started just fine even when left out overnight in 1F temperature.
But still were I faced with using my Turbo that cold of temperature again I'd switch to 0w-40 oil just for some peace of mind.

From Pwdr's post above "M1 5W50 is on the Porsche approved list."
Why would you use anything else if you wanted to run "Thicker" oil.
I even use it here during the harsh California winters.
