I happen to agree with Mike. If you don't care about your dirt issues into the engine, the non OEM filters probably give 5HP. If you do and a 25k engine is something worth protecting at all costs...and you plan to keep the car a long time, the paper is IMHO better....and what I am doing.

I do like Dan and Kevin's options in terms of dual snorkels. But, I have not seen data for a dual snorker with oem paper (apples to apples) yet.

Anyone?

Jeff

I agree with Jeff and that was the point of my first post (#4). Unless you are building a car for the mile and need every single HP, the stock box and paper filter are fine. Do the others flow more, yeah probably, but not enough for me to risk the cleanliness of my very expensive engine.

if you sprinkle some dirt on the KN filter you will make it more efficient at removing dirt, just don't put the dirty side facing the maf

Ard - thanks for your post. Not selling, just posting what I have used, dynoed, and tested. Everyone has there own opinions.

Mikelly - give me a ring.

Boca996tt - sorry it will not work with the GT2 wing.

Can you give some insight on where the stock box, filter, and MAF run out in your experience? Any one restriction worse than the others?

If a higher flowing filter gives say 5WHP at stock airflow levels then it's only going to give more at higher levels. Likewise if the MAF is out of flow then a higher flowing filter isn't going to help nearly as much...

From dyno testing the K&N filter, its peak gain was only about 5hp. There was an old thread about this. The stock MAF runs out around the 600-650 crank horsepower range from my experience.

Paper it is then unless someone is building something sick The potential oil issues aren't worth it even if the filter is pretty "dry". The ISO test data on clogging posted earlier is an eye opener for sure.

Let's assume filter paper is better than oiled cloth at filtering, but more
restrictive. But this is on an apples-to-apples basis: surface area. An
oiled cloth filter with 10 sq. inches of exposed surface area will be much
more restrictive than a paper filter with 100 sq. inches of surface area.
We must credit Porsche engineers with enough high school level physics
skill to have calculated the area of paper needed to make flow a non-issue
at stock power levels. For any higher-power car, if and when it is determined
that the filter element is a gating factor, the correct solution is to simply
increase the area of paper. This would be much wiser than simply changing
to a filter medium which flows better but doesn't actually filter as well, and
needs care and maintenance to boot. Any box design that adds a second
parallel paper element gives the air immediately half the resistance with no
loss of filtering. Even two smaller paper elements that still have 30-40% more
total area would still be the total solution for any car producing up to 700hp.
Joe

Dumb me, I just now realized that the stock air filter is about 3 ft long. Is that
right? If so, no one is going to ba able to make a 2-stock-element box... The
only hopes would be for an incrementally wider/taller paper element...
