Buying a 996tt with tip.

Hello guys,

after just browsing threads for the past few months I finally decided to join 6speedonline. I currently drive a BMW 335i with just about every mod available, however; all though my car hangs with a 996 with epl flash I am not satisfied with the car. I am going to be trading it in a purchasing a 01 996tt tiptronic with 50k miles on it. I want to know if you have any advice as to what to look out for. I know 01 manual cars have 2nd gear pop-out issues. However, what should I look out for on the auto?

I am going to have it shipped directly from California to CPT and most likely will be installing the GT3071 turbos, injectors, plugs, flash, filter, forged dv's, new suspension, the car already has a fabspeed 100-cell exhaust. After all this how reliable will this car be?

Also Stuttgart performance will be doing the PPI on the car Monday. Is there anything additional I should be aware of?

The reason I ask is because I have pretty much maxed out my funds with the car and all the mods I will be putting into the car and need to make sure there are no surprises.

Thank you for taking the time to respond. I’m excited about becoming a Porsche member!

-Vince

well my tranny went out on mine but that was from the previous owner beating it, but upgrading the torque converter will probably cost around 4k

here is an upgraded torque converter for 4300 but 2600 is refunded if you give them your old torque converter http://www.evoms.com/marketplace/Vie...002C337C06B%7D

Will you be involved with the purchase? ie see it, drive it?

Do you actually know WHAT is in a "PPI"???? You should have a detailed list of inspection items and criteria. There is no common definition of a PPI... many don't even pull DME codes.

That is a poor plan. Stuff always happens. If something goes wrong with the plan, will it be the seller's fault, Stuttgart's fault or CPTs fault?

My 2 cents

Ill make sure I add that in when they throw in the other stuff since the motor will already be out. Is there anything else to worry about with the tip? Thanks for your help.

Not really. I wont be able to drive it. Im relying on Brian to give me the feed back.

Thats what Im having them do. They will be pulling the codes from the DME, driving it, and inspecting the car on the lift. Its better then I can do since I dont know what to look for or even how it, "should" feel.

That is a poor plan. Stuff always happens. If something goes wrong with the plan, will it be the seller's fault, Stuttgart's fault or CPTs fault?

I am aware that there is a risk involved. However, what im worried about is not the small stuff like a water pump going out. Im more worried about thing that my be inherent to this particular model, ie. components of the engine or trans failing.

From another thread, someone mentioned that 01 Tip is not as smooth as 02+. You may want to put that into your considerations.

I don't know of any tips running GT30's. You might want to consider 24/18's instead. If you go with the 30's you will need headers, bigger intercoolers and hoses and the EVOMs torque converter upgrade for sure! Hell, my 24/18's trashed my TC. Know one has yet to confirm how much HP the tip can actually handle. Rebuit tranny's are about $8k.

K24/18g's trashed your stock TC or the upgraded one? I will get the IC, headers, and hoses as well. I plan on building the bottom end up in about a year or two.

I have between 10-15k to spend right now on mods and just want the best and most reliable set up. When I talked to Tony@EPL he recommended the GT3071 turbos over the K24/18g's. Am I missing something?

He must have recommended the Tial GT3071 direct bolt on over the k24/18g's. They supposedly spool faster and can potentially make more power. But the TQ Conv seems to be a issue here.

The stock TC couldn't handle the 24/18's. I just replaced it this week with the EVOms unit. How much whp do you expect out of the 30's? In my opinion, you might need an engine build sooner than later. Good luck, Tony has a pretty good following here on The 6. He won't steer you wrong.

I think I will probably run no more then 650 at the crank. Tony thinks that this will be safe. I figured going with the GT30 turbo will afford me the ability to turn up the power once the engine is rebuilt.
