Buying a Turbo

HEllo All.....Ive been a member of the 996 C2 Forum for some time now....But the time has come to Buy a Turbo....I was not sure if i should buy a C4s or a Turbo...but the wife told me to buy a turbo...and if i needed justification...She wanted it...

SO there it is....

Now the question is Year??? Are there many differennces from year to year in the turbo?? Best Year?? Things to look out for???

Any advise is most helpful...I was thinking 2005 TurboS but i dont want the PCCB

Best bet is to stay 03-04 Turbo. Why? No issues with 2nd gear pop-out like in 01-02's and not as expensive as the near identical 05's.

dre_techie is infamous around these parts
I've been doing similar research for a bit and these are some of the threads I found useful: Which 996TT to buy? and for modding: Why I went with 16/16g's over 24/18g's plus the stickies.

MY02 introduces glove box, cupholders, hollow wheels (same design, better handling), Bose became standard
MY03 PCM II navigation system introduced

"No issues"? Huh?

OP: cars are fundamentally the same year-to-year, with some of the tweaks dre_techie mentioned. Some '01s have hollow wheels. If the car has bumperettes on the front, the wheels are solid (heavier) unless they've been replaced.

As far as PCM1 (earlier) Navigation goes, it's worthless. Terrible. So glad I'm about to replace mine with an aftermarket system.

I would say find one with the right condition, color, mileage, price, etc. and don't worry about the year Look for a car with service records, especially the bi-annual/30k service. Make sure the clutch is sharp, expensive job. Check the coolant tank to see if it's white (good) or yellow (bad). Ask about second gear popout (see sticky at top). I have my original tranny on my 01 and it's good as gravy, but it's good to know the history just in case...

No matter what, get a thorough PPI!

Oh, and if you want GOBS of power down the road, get an X50 / Turbo S car that came with K24 turbos instead of the stock K16s. They're good for apparently 650 crank HP or so when modded into 24/18gs, compared to perhaps 600 or so with K16/16Gs.

Thanks guys...I am friends with my dealer so everything will go through them...but you guys told me exactly what i needed to know...like i said the NA cars i know..Turbo's not so much. and as for 600 or 650 max hp...not worried...though the x50 package would be nice...the S cars are alot more then the non-S x50...plus i think the X-50's can be found with Steel brakes unline the 05 Turbo S
