Remember the bad power steering pump, well...
I'm breaking in my new crate motor from Suncoast and I got (what I think) is this whine/squeal that everybody seems to be describing. My crate motor is an '04 X50. Does anybody know if these parts would be attached to the crate motor? Is it possible that my new parts actually have this flaw (and are thus the older, original style valves that are susceptible to this issue)?
My '01 motor never had this issue as far as I know but it could have been updated with the prior owner...
Hopefully if I do have the older style parts that they are under warranty for update!
Any advice is appreciated. Car goes BACK to the shop tomorrow...neverending with these upgrades!

It was just the fan belt ider pulley
On my 03 X50 it was the right side (looking at the engine from the back of the car) fan belt idler pulley that was making the whinning noise. Its black, about 3 1/2 dia, held on by one bolt through the center. Easy to remove. Hope this helps.
how many miles is this bearing generally good for? thanks.
Idler Pulley
My 2003 996TT X50 only has 22,000 miles on it I think (its been in the warehouse all winter), not sure how many miles Landjet (larry) has on his. I haven't seen him since November 2009
I hate comparing these cars mechanically to GMs and Fords, but the bearings in the belt drive systems take one heck of a beating from the tension that is applied, coupled with the amount of contaminant that floats around an engine bay. Doesn't surprise me that we're seeing these bearings fail at all. Some GM units I've replaced on trucks I've owned would last 20-25K miles, while others would outlast the vehicle. Go figure! I suspect it's a "lot number" of bad assemblies, more than anything else. My 2001 hasn't made a peep, other than getting belt squeel on start-up after the car has been washed.
For what it's worth, I think Larry's mechanic was a standup guy and admitted it. He could easily have brushed it aside with some other claim to hide it, but did the right thing. Lots of mechanics will do this, some won't. Larry, who is your indy? Might have to look them up at some point!
