Front end noise

I have an 02' 996 X50 The front end is making a clunking in the suspention. It makes the noise on a bumpy road and at a slow roll when you apply the brakes not under acceleration. The sway bar links are tight and every thing seams to be normal the passanger side strut mount ia a little sloppy but not bad. Problem is the noise is coming from the drivers side and that side seams tight. I am going to replace the strut mounts since the car has 400,000 miles on it (joking it has 45,000) Question is anthing else to look for?

might be the front upper strut mounts. Im looking at a car and the dealer maintenance records show this as a recommended fix. the notes read that the owner had complained of a noise.
