Transmission Oil Change

Is it overkill to swap the transmission oil during my 60,000 mile service?

I want to get it done before I drive the car cross county.
Same goes for my diff oil.

Car is 2001 and never had a transmission oil change.

Also, what brand would everyone recommend?

I change every 30k. Just me...too many stories in the Audi world about "lifetime tranny fluid" killing tiptronics. Yes, this is a manual, etc, but if you drive hard or DE it cannot hurt to take care of things. It is amazing how many metal shaving are in there... I had my 2nd gear issue fixed an in the space of 2k miles did it twice. Just me...at rebuild and then just after.

Porsche specific fluid or Mobil 1 Delvac. NOT the regular Mobil 1 gear stuff from Pep Boys...Delvac. If you are nervous, just have the dealer or the Porsche smart indy do it....it has to be the right stuff.

I have sourced it mail order from Lufteknic in VA. You need about 1.2 Gallons (someone give the guy better data than I have please!).

Search, this has been covered a lot on the forum...probably in 6 threads in the last 2 years.

If they don't have it at autozone or pepboys, where else can i go and pick it up?

Or do I have to purchase online?

You need to pick up two (1)gallon containers of Mobil 1 Delvac....I'm assuming you have a 6 speed. It takes a bit more than a gallon to change out the fluid in the transmission as well as the front differential which requires you to buy two of the one gallon jugs of Delvac. Your location shows you in Korea? I assume you're back stateside by now? Lufteknic sells it for $42 a gallon, but I bought it from a source in Northern California for $26 per gallon. PM me for details if you want to get it from the NorCal distributor...otherwise you can pay Lufteknic's price. I was never able to find it at any of the auto stores.

Nope, still in Korea. Stationed here for a bit but once I leave, I have to drive from NY to WA for my next duty station.

I just need to know if Redline Light-Shockproof 75W90 will rid of most of the transmission chatter that is known to accompany an LWFW.

I would stick with the M1. I did have a very interesting conversation with the guy at S-Car-Go about tranny fluids.....

The people with whom I spoke when I had my tranny rebuilt for 2nd gear repair for a LARGE sum (to me)...all suggested to use Mobil-1..the 996TT specific stuff mentioned above.

The chatter is ONLY at idle. If you are moving, no chatter (in my car at least, UMW kit).

Call the guy at S-car-go. He is very nice. Everyone else was pro M1 around the country (when I called now over a year ago). I used Delvac in my last refill. He had another fill ...not even sure if it was synthetic.
