Do I just suck or is there a secret to eliminating 1st gear bogging?

O.k., everytime I really try to get on it in my car from a stand-still, first gear seems to bog really bad. Ami I doing something wrong, or do these cars tend to have a flat spot of sorts when launching hard in first gear?
What I do is raise the revs to about 3k (not willing to abuse the car by going higher) and drop the clutch and floor it, but the car seems to bog a bit and hit a flat spot when I do this. Any suggestions or advice would be awesome. There is no bogging I can detect in other gears.

Scott,
I think it is completely the engagement action of the OEM power assisted clutch. It is impossible to modulate properly and results in irregular, unpredictable and bogged launches. If you were to convert to the GT2 non-assisted style clutch, you would not bog any longer. The clutch action was one of the first and only aspects of the 996TT that I immediately disliked. I took a chance on a GT2 style clutch mod a few years ago and it was everything I was hoping for...the car became totally predictable and every launch is perfect, without even trying hard. No more bogged starts...I think this is what you are looking for and the only way I know of to improve the launch characteristics. The clutch feedback with the GT2 conversion is so perfect, I can not say enough good things about it.

I've driven a few 911 turbos both stock and modded but never had any issues with bogging at all...never had the issue on my old 996C2 either...
Maybe it just takes some more time getting used to?

Is traction control enabled or off? With some mods (i see you have tonys flash, dvs and exhaust) it IS possible to get some small amount of wheel spin if you are launching it relatively strong. If traction control is on, you may just be having a momentary slip recognition and the DME would pull some boost and timing initially which you could interpret as bogging. Try launching with traction control verified as OFF and let us know if it made a difference.
I dislike the stock clutch in my car too. I have to concentrate on every start to get it right. Every now and then I still mess up and am very embarassed in traffic...they must think I can afford a Porsche but dont know how to drive it!
You are not the first to complain about this clutch.
Are you able to launch most of the time with restrained rpm's or is it impossible?

With the GT2 clutch you can launch perfectly either very easy, very hard or anything in between, it doesn't matter. You can feel the engagement, exactly as it is happening, so you are able to modulate the clutch perfectly for any situation. With the OEM clutch, this type of consistent control is impossible, as the feedback is not there to dictate your input.

Hey guys, thanks for the input. To answer a few of the questions, I have tried to launch it hard with traction control on and off, and have the issue regardless. I'm surprised to hear it may be the clutch action, as the bogging I experience happens well after the clutch has been totally let out. The bogging occurs after I floor the gas AFTER I let the clutch pedal all the way out. Its almost like there is a flat spot or power drop right as I do this.
To answer the other question, I really don't find the car that hard to launch in regular driving conditions, although I do agree that it takes more concentration than my other manual cars did (previously had a 98 boxster and 01 boxster s, in addition to a tiptronic 996, but that doesn't count
. But no, I find the car relatively easy to launch with restrained rpm's.
I'm starting to wonder if I have a hardware issue of sorts. I data logged for the first time with my durametric about a week ago, and some of the numbers looked strange, but I really have no idea what everything means. Maybe I'll post my durametric results later this weekend and see if anyone has any input.
Thanks again for the input guys. Scott.

Scott,
Maybe it's something else...but what I found with my car was that the OEM clutch tends to bite hard at the end, even if you don't want it to and this often causes a bog. That's where the modulation feedback helped me a lot by enabling precise feathering of the clutch. My car used to bog often before the clutch conversion. Now it never does...
